Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN), is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that provides free one-to-one recreational opportunities for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities. At each KEEN session, a participating Athlete is paired with a volunteer Coach for a variety of age-appropriate recreational activities. Founded in 1992, KEEN is modeled on an innovative program developed in England. KEEN athletes have disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, various intellectual and developmental disabilities. Unlike other recreation programs for individuals with disabilities, KEEN provides and open, unstructured environment for people with any type of disability, including those with significant needs. For some of the children and young adults who are unable to participate in other programs, KEEN may be their only recreational activity.

HURRICANE IRENE: A reminder to us all to carry flood insurance
Just days after an earthquake shook the east coast, Hurricane Irene followed with the second natural disaster of the week. On August 28, 2011, Irene was the first hurricane to make landfall in the state of NJ since 1903. Many of our clients were not prepared for something of this magnitude and must consider all options to ready themselves for the next catastrophe.
At least 15 states were affected by this hurricane. Many of our insureds experienced considerable damage from VA up to NJ. Homes and businesses experienced major water damage as a result of severe rainfall along with run off from higher elevations. For many, this was a painful reminder that flood damage is not coverage by homeowner or business owner policies; even though flooding is the most common and frequent natural disaster.
You can protect your assets from flooding as a result of heavy rains, melting snow, blocked storm drainage systems and more. While some who are located in flood zones are required to carry this coverage, it is available to all. You may even qualify for a preferred risk policy that offers lower rates. Call us today to speak to someone about this very important coverage.
As part of our Trusted Choice pledge, we kept up to date information on our website and Facebook/Twitter pages regarding the hurricane. We hope we prepared you all and ask that you check out our website and social media sites in the future.

EARTHQUAKE COVERAGE
On August 23, 2011 a 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook the East Coast. The epicenter was near Mineral, VA, but tremors could be felt from Georgia to Canada and as far west as Illinois. Damage from the earthquake was found as far away as Brooklyn and has been estimated at $200-$300 million with a mere $100 million being insured. Although the risk on the East coast for catastrophic earthquake may be low, the effect in dollars is much higher than a typical loss. Because of the perception of low risk, neither the public nor private sector has developed earthquake preparedness programs that teach people how to protect against earthquake damage and injury.
While it's true that most earthquakes in the US occur west of the Rocky Mountains, we on the East Coast need to consider insuring our property against earthquake damage. Earthquake coverage provides protection from shaking and cracking that can destroy buildings and personal possessions. Standard homeowner and business owner policies do not coverage damage caused by an earthquake. Coverage is available, however, to both homes and businesses as an endorsement on their present policies or as a separate policy depending on the insurer. Earthquake insurance is a little different from most coverages in that the deductible is a percentage rather than a set deductible. The percentage deductible can range anywhere from 2-20% and depending on the deductible you choose, the rates will vary accordingly. Like most insurance policies, the higher the deductible, the lower the rate.

OCTOBER IS FIRE SAFETY MONTH
According to the Home Safety Council, 97% of homes have smoke alarms installed. However, home fires continue to be the third leading cause of unintentional home injury-related deaths.
To help reduce fire-related injuries there are two important things you can do: install and test smoke detectors and create a fire escape plan. For more information, please visit www.homesafetycouncil.org
Did you know many companies offer safety prevention discounts for devises such as fire/smoke alarms and fire extinguishers? Be sure to let us know if you have these in your home or business!
