Next Sunday: Vampire Weekend

I was a little worried about the 11:00 service. How would people react to bringing in Led Zepplin (Stairway to Heaven) and Aerosmith (Dream On).

I knew how these would fit together and reflect the scripture. It’s so easy to think “we are climbing Jacob’s ladder” instead of remembering that in the Bible, Jacob never gets on the ladder. Angels are ascending and descending, and God comes down and offers grace to that undeserving scoundrel Jacob.

We buy into the wrong dreams, our dreams, instead of asking what dreams God might have for us. We climb on the wrong ladder; hence, “there’s a lady who is sure all that glitters is gold, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven”.

I worried that someone would be upset about hearing “the devil’s music” played on the organ. But we Methodists have a long tradition of taking bar tunes and adding hymn texts. William Booth asked “why should the devil get all the best tunes?”

After the service, one of our visitors shared that this was their first time ever attending a church service. Our visitor loved that I used a line from Stairway to Heaven. It turned out that this is the visitor’s all time favorite song.

How cool is that? Who could predict that John would play Stairway to Heaven, someone’s all time favorite song, the first time they came to church? Surely God was in this place.

This week I’ve been thinking about a sermon example from the indie rock band Vampire Weekend. I wonder who will show up!

I’ll see you this Sunday,

Pastor Cyndi McDonald

Children's Art on Bulletin Covers

Mission Moment - Jacque Tapley

Jacque was born in Worland, Wyoming and grew up in Idaho; Houston, Atlanta, West Palm Beach, and Merritt Island, FL. At age 23, she moved to Atlanta for better job opportunities, and now is the Office Manager for Guided Therapeutics, Inc.; a company that researches and develops non-invasive medical diagnostic devices. They are currently trying to get a cervical cancer detection device to market. Her office is right around the corner from the church, next to the Hilton Hotel on PIB.

Jacque met her husband Sam in high school. At their 30-year class reunion, Sam inquired about her to some mutual friends and they started e-mailing each other (he still lived in Florida at the time.) They started dating in 2003 and were married in Negril, Jamaica on May 16, 2006.

When Sam moved to Atlanta in 2004, she was attending another United Methodist church. They decided that they wanted a smaller, more personal church. They had driven by Mt. Carmel many times and finally tried Mt. Carmel in late 2005. Jacque says, "We were hooked on that first Sunday. We both loved the people, the sanctuary and felt the Holy Spirit working there."

Jacque enjoys reading, crocheting, knitting, sewing, making jewelry, singing and arranging flowers. She uses her talent for flower arrangements for the sanctuary once a month, and leads the decorating of the flowering cross for Easter. She helps organize the Transformers Sunday School class, volunteers for BBQ and other fundraisers, serves with the Family Promise Ministry and sings with the choir on occasion.

What you may not know is that she was extremely shy growing up, which she attributes to going to 12 different schools between Kindergarten and 12th grade. She didn't come out of her "shell" until she moved here to Atlanta. Jacque concludes, "I think it is safe to say I'm not really 'shy' anymore."

You can view Jacque's Mission Moment here.

Children's Ministry News

Sunday School

Our lesson this week is Exodus 2: 23-25, 3:10-15, 4:10-17 and Moses is the main character. God asks Moses to lead his people out of Egypt and although Moses is afraid, he agrees to serve God.

The children’s lesson is centered on the name of God, “I AM.” God’s name “I Am” means God is with us right now.

We are also focusing on service and we will try to identify what God is asking us to do right now. Have a conversation with your children about what service God asks of you as a family.

Grades 3 - 5 are looking at the history books of the New Testament. They are getting close to the conclusion of the annual Using My Bible series. Thank you Miss Jeanne, Miss Julie and Miss Kathy.
