Stick Your Hand In
Sunday’s bread for Holy Communion was so good that I had some after worship…and a little more…and a little more…until I realized that I didn’t need to each lunch. I had filled up with bread better than anything in my kitchen at home!
I asked Ms. Lorrie for the recipe, which she kindly provided (the recipe is below). I was a bit disappointed when I read through the list of ingredients. I hoped for a magic ingredient that would guarantee a beautiful loaf, but this recipe is similar to other bread recipes with which I have tried and failed. I think that I will need to watch her in action in order to learn to make a good bread dough.
My mother tried to teach me to make biscuits, but she didn’t use a recipe. She put flour in a wood bowl—it has to be wood—and then a handful of shortening. She did not measure, and had no idea how much flour or shortening was used. As she worked the shortening into the flour, she made me stick my hand in too. Each time she put my hand in the mix, she would tell me to feel the mix. “Do you feel it now? Not enough shortening.” “Do you feel it now? That’s how it is supposed to feel.”
Then she poured buttermilk into the mix and told me to stick my hand in again. “Not enough buttermilk feels like this”. She added more buttermilk and told me again to put my hand in and feel it.
I couldn’t tell the difference in the feeling of “not enough shortening” or “just right buttermilk”. But mom could. She has made biscuits so many times, and stuck her hands in the mix so many times, that she knows when the ingredient amounts are just right.
It’s that way in discipleship too. You stick your hand in the mix—you look back on the day and realize a little more prayer is needed. You look back on the week and think about those you have loved.
It’s good every now and then to stick your hand in the mix and ask whether you have the right balance of ingredients—time for your own spiritual development balanced with time to reach out to others.
Like making biscuits, discipleship is an art that is developed with practice, and best done under the guidance of a good teacher. It can be messy and time consuming. But, oh, the rewards!
I’ll see you this Sunday,
Ms. Lorrie's Bread
1 1/2 cups hot water
1/3 cup oil
1/3 cup honey
2 tsp. salt
1 Tbs. yeast
4 to 4 1/2 cups flour. (Ms. Lorrie grinds her own grain.)
If you grind your own wheat, add:
2 Tbs. Lecithin and
1 tsp. gluten
Combine water, oil, honey, salt and egg.
Add lecithin, gluten, and half of the flour. Mix thoroughly.
Add yeast and enough flour to make a soft dough. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 5-6 minutes). Let rise until double.
Shape as desired and let rise again until double. For two 1-pound loaves bake at 350 F for 25-30 minutes.
(If you double the recipe, knead 8 minutes. Triple or quadruple recipe then knead 12 minutes.)
Dear Mt. Carmel Family,
Your actions of love totally overwhelmed me during the death of my Mother. All of the food brought to my home, coming to the funeral, the prayers and cards were so generous. My entire family appreciates your "loving kindness". Thank you.

Spiritual Life Retreat:
Each year Camp Glisson offers several Spiritual Life Retreats. These meaningful weekends are a time of growing in the faith and getting to know youth from other churches. We would like to go for the weekend retreat on March 15-17. There is a speaker, band, small group times, and lots more. What to bring, directions, a schedule and paperwork are available at http://www.ngumc.org/pages/detail/1286.
The retreat cost is $130. However, please as always, if money is the primary concern (I know that things can be tight this time of year) tell me and we will make arrangements to assist in whatever way possible. Please contact me if you have questions or are interested in participating.

United Methodist Men's Sunday -
This year our United Methodist Men will lead the worship service on Sunday, April 14th and they need your help!
The UMM would like to include a presentation showing our men in action! If you have any photos from any of the United Methodist Men's events, meetings, BBQ's, retreats or other activities, please forward them to George Hunter at email@example.com.
Thank you for your help, and mark your calendars for April 14th!
The dinosaurs have invaded the Preschool! One day the hall was empty and the next it was full of huge, colorful creatures! Why? Because in January we always study dinosaurs and it is the favorite subject of the year! Our Three’s are the artists who add 2 new creatures each year and some of our older friends go to that dumpster in the sky. It is a wonderful project and makes a huge impact on our students. The Four’s make their annual pilgrimage to Fernbank to see the skeletal remains of our prehistoric friends and trace the fossils that are imbedded in the floor of the museum. It is a privilege for our oldest group of students and a trip well worth making!
Please be reminded that we have no school on Monday, January 21 as it is Martin Luther King Day and a holiday. We will be back in school on Tuesday.
Next week we will have our friend, Geof Johnson, join us with songs in Fellowship Hall. I encourage everyone to attend, whether you are a Preschool student or not! Geof is talented, energetic, and so much fun. We look forward to his visit every year. Geof will begin his program at 10:30 on Wednesday, January 23, so put this date on your calendar in red ink!
The following week, on Wednesday and Thursday, January 30 and 31 will be in-house and church registration for the fall of 2013. I will send the new paperwork home via email for those who would like to do it in the quiet of home, and it should be returned on either of the two days aforementioned. Parents may add the $100 registration fee to their tuition checks. New students are asked to pay the registration fee, plus September tuition. Blank sheets will be available in Fellowship Hall if needed. Community registration is Friday, February 1 at 9:00 in Fellowship Hall. If parents bring in new families to the school, their registration fee will be waived. Come on guys, let’s fill the house for the fall!
In joy and love,
Summer Volunteers Needed
We have been approached about hosting a children’s summer lunch program in which volunteers meet at the church to pack lunches. This would require one or two church members to commit to serve as hosts on weekdays throughout the summer. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact the church office.
