Be Blessed

This Sunday is the one of my favorites, the Blessing of the Backpacks. Children and youth will bring their backpacks, and we as a congregation will pray for the coming year.

When I came to Mt Carmel, I had never blessed a backpack. I was told I needed to say something as I placed a hand on each backpack.

It seemed like it should be more than a prayer for the backpack itself. After all, who wants to hear a prayer that the backpacks be sturdy to carry lots of books? That the zippers don’t get stuck?

How do you pray for a backpack? It’s not a normal prayer request!

Most of the time the prayer requests that I receive are health related. Would the church pray for someone going through surgery? Would I pray for someone with cancer?

Sometimes our prayers are reactions to circumstances. We pray because our hearts are breaking over tsunami damage, a shooting, a conflict. We pray when someone has lost a job or is facing retirement. We pray when a baby is due or when someone is traveling.

But this Sunday we are intentional rather than reactionary. Even though the children are healthy and strong, we pray for them, that they grow, not only in mind and body, but in friendships with others, and in relationship with God.

Take a moment to pray for the children. Don’t wait until there is trouble. Be intentional.

We call it blessing of the backpacks. But it’s really the blessing of the children.

I’ll see you this Sunday,

Final Painting Party: August 5

The narrative lectionary banners for the fall are almost done!

Thank you to everyone who has helped paint them so far.  There will be one more "painting party" to finish up the final details on Tuesday, August 5 at 10:00 AM in the Hope House.

Everyone is invited.  See Pastor Cyndi if you have any questions.

Hallway Sign

Thank you to Susan Posey for lending the artwork that you'll see as you enter the sanctuary during August!

This artwork was created in 2003 by Rev. Ashley Calhoun, U.M. minister in Knoxville, Tennessee, in honor of the 300th anniversary of John Wesley's birth.

Children's Ministry

Sunday School:
This week is the Blessing of the Backpacks during the 9:30 and 11:00 service, so everyone remember to bring your backpacks to church!

It is also Promotion Sunday. We will celebrate going back to school during our time together downstairs.

Rising 3rd graders will also receive their Bibles from the church.

Next week our wonderful team of children’s Sunday School teachers starts back with their classes telling the Good Samaritan story.

Children’s Art Work for Bulletin
This fall we will again be using children’s art interpretations of the narrative lectionary scriptures as our bulletin covers each week.

I have a sign up list for you to select the scripture you would like to draw. We would like for every child to draw a picture. Art work will be due back on September 1.

Marian Long, Director of Children's Ministries

Outreach Opportunities

Food Bags for Local Families

The Berkeley Lake Elementary School Care Team currently serves 6 families with 9 bags of food carried home by students each Friday of the school year. As families no longer need help, they roll off the list and another family is added. The program was started a few years ago when

families were hiring a taxi to come pick up food at the school food pantry.

Each food bag contains:
  • dry beans
  • bag of rice
  • package of tortillas
  • canned fruit
  • tuna/salmon/other canned meat
  • canned corn or other veggie
  • mac and cheese
Additional items if available:
  • detergent (a baggy or pods, not a whole box)
  • toothpaste
  • bar of soap
  • other household or hygiene product
The program could be expanded with a commitment from Mt. Carmel. In addition to preparing bags, help may be needed on Fridays to deliver the bags to the classrooms.

If you are interested in supporting this program in some way, please contact Julie Jones at 770-263-1009 or  jaj31@bellsouth.net.

Harvest of Hope is the ecumenical study, worship, and action mission trip program of the Society of St. Andrew. HoH offers opportunities to learn about hunger and a common sense solution (gleaning) to the issue. (See video on the Mt. Carmel website here.)

Together we will glean fresh fruits and vegetables which will immediately, through the help of local feeding agencies, find their way onto the tables of those in need. A simple, healthy lifestyle will be experienced during the event. We will worship together, exploring what God wants us to do concerning our neighbors who are in need.

Join us and do something about hunger!
