Treasure Hunting at Mt Carmel

It’s happened several times in the last two days. A car pulls into the church parking lot. The trunk pops open. Someone hauls in garbage bags and cardboard boxes bursting with treasures for the yard sale on Sunday.

And they are treasures! The Fellowship Hall tables are being filled with lamps, tool boxes, microwaves, a hydraulic floor jack, wrench set, dishes, baskets, a tv wall mount, thermoses, flip flops, and plastic daffodils.

I wander through the room and the electric keyboard makes me wonder whether it’s too late to learn to play an instrument. The yoga mat entices. I have an unplayed yoga DVD at home, maybe I would finally do this if I had a yoga mat. There are Southern Living cookbooks and I think of all the good recipes I clipped and saved over the years from that magazine.

There are treasures, but you and I know where the real treasure is found. It’s about more than children’s books and sidewalk chalk, or even the pitcher and bowl that reminds me of my grandmother. The treasure is seen in the hearts of those who open a closet or a dresser drawer and say, “I am blessed. Let me share.”

I’m thankful to you for sharing your time and stuff for Saturday’s yard sale. These gifts show love to the “least of these” in our area. There is treasure to be found, not just at the yard sale, but in the hearts of the people of Mt Carmel.

I’ll see you this Sunday,

Pastor Cyndi McDonald

Children's Art on Bulletin Covers

Thank you to Isaac Campbell for his rendition of "The Binding of Isaac" that was on the bulletin cover last Sunday!

Watch for more great artwork from our children on upcoming bulletins.

Yard Sale on Saturday!

The Transformer Sunday school class is coordinating a church-wide yard sale on the front lawn of the church (or Fellowship Hall in case of rain.) All proceeds from the yard sale will benefit Norcross Cooperative Ministry’s Restoring Hope program.

Items for sale can be left in the Fellowship Hall beginning on Monday, September 16th.

Bring your friends and neighbors to help out or shop!

Mission Moment - George Hunter!

This Sunday's mission moment was an interview of our church photographer George Hunter.

George is from Anchorage, Alaska, and his heritage is both Alaskan native and Northern European. As a "military brat, " he grew up in Florida, the Philippines and DC. George and his wife Lila moved to Duluth in 2001 and joined Mt Carmel in 2009. George is a support manager at Fundtech Corporation. He and Lila have five dogs and are fostering two dogs

In addition to photography, George enjoys archery and messing around with computers. At Mt Carmel, George has been part of Family Promise, and the creative teams for stewardship and Stations of the Cross. He is part of the Transformers class, which meets on Sundays in the Hope House at 10:45.

You can view George's Mission Moment here.

From Our Director of Music

Here's a musical news flash ... for those of you who have friends and colleagues who have adhered to the superficial notion that organs and pipe organs are no longer relevant for contemporary worship ... so sorry for the disappointment, but they are all sadly mistaken and have completely missed the mark.

Come to Mt. Carmel UMC on Sunday and listen to me play my own rendition of Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" (opening section) for the prelude and a fully improvised Sortie on the band's reprise, fused together with Aerosmith's "Dream On" as the postlude.

The sermon topic ... Jacob's Ladder. And what will the choir sing? "Jacob's Ladder."

Pipe organs and Zeppelin!  Couldn't be better and all completely in the evangelical context of John and Charles Wesley!  Reality Check in Place Here :)

How totally cool is that?!  Pipe organs and Zeppelin!  Couldn't be better and all completely in the evangelical context of John and Charles Wesley!  Reality Check in Place Here :)

Children's Ministry News

Sunday School

This week's lesson is the story of Jacob's ladder from Genesis 27 and 28.

Jacob is alienated from his family and is alone in the wilderness. Something surprising happens to him. God comforts Jacob .God does great things through Jacob, so Jacob can make the world a better place. Jacob worships God by praising him and building an altar.

Brainstorm with your child about how they can praise God and worship him.

Big Thank You

The Children's Council thanks Chris Bolton for the wonderful job she did painting the Baby Nursery. It looks so bright and and beautiful. Thank you so much Chris. Everyone must stop by and see the new décor.

Flamingos Headed to Mt. Carmel

This Sunday, September 22 will be your last chance to buy Flamingo Insurance!

Flocks of Flamingos will begin appearing on the lawns of members and friends of Mt. Carmel the week of September 29.

If you DO NOT want the Flamingos to visit you, please stop by the insurance table located outside the sanctuary door to purchase your insurance in the amount of $15.00. Insurance policies will continue to be sold on September 15 and 22.
(OR sign on the "no-nesting" sheet at the table if you would rather NOT participate.)

If you would like for the flamingos to come for a visit, please check the box on the back of the connect card in the bulletin or you can stop by the Flamingo Table and sign up on our Nesting Site sheet.

When the flamingos arrive at your house, please follow the directions that are in the Bag on a flamingo. Please do not bring the flamingos back to the church - they will be removed within 24 hours.

The flamingos visit your home as an act of kindness and love from the youth. Thanks for your support!

Preschool News

Dear Friends,

We are enjoying the lovely weather as much as possible and the children are full of energy so it’s a win-win situation!

I am happy to announce that we did have enough students to fill the yoga class, but there is still room in all three after school programs, so if you have been contemplating a class or two, feel free to sign your child up for some fun!

As you know, my home is Wedding Central and the guests have started to arrive. Wednesday marks the onslaught of the majority of family joining the festivities, so I will be out Thursday-Tuesday fulfilling my role as mother-of-the-bride and cruise director. You will all be in capable hands and should you need something, please get in touch with Suzanne, our church secretary extraordinaire. She will point you in the direction you need to go! We are so fortunate to have her helping us every day! Thank you, Suzanne!

Please remember to keep washing your hands and your child’s hands every day after school. We wash as soon as we come in, then several times throughout the day, but you also need to continue washing at home. That is the only way we can keep a handle on the viruses that enter our school from worlds unknown. Anti-bacterial hand sanitizer is good for bacteria but doesn’t touch viruses. We need to wash those down the drain!

It is a lovely year and we are enjoying our time together. There are still open spaces in every level and we need more little ones as in Toddlers and Two’s! If you happen to see one wandering the streets, send him our way!

In joy and love,
Lorrie

Blessing of the Animals

On Sunday, October 6th at 4:00 PM we will have THE BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS on the front lawn of the church.

Celebrate these special family members that bless you.

Thank You Very Much

To our Mt. Carmel family,

Thank you so much for the cards, prayers and kindnesses shown to us on the death of Craig's sister. Your care means so much at this sad time.

Sincerely,
Jan & Craig German
