Before You Go, Check the Flow

Every day this week I call the phone number to “check the flow.” What’s the Chattahoochee river level? Our confirmation students want a baptism and remembrance of baptism on Sunday, and we need to know whether it’s safe to get in the water!

For the last two months, Andrew, Elizabeth, Johnny, Max and Megan have been talking about what it means to follow Jesus and to be part of a church. Together with their mentors, they have asked questions about what it means to be saved and how God is at work at times like baptism and Holy Communion. They have talked about pets and snoring, alcoholism and child slavery. They have listened to God speak through scripture, baked bread, thrown eggs, and reflected on what it means to be created in the image of God.

In addition to asking questions, they have answered. Do you recognize your need for God? Will you claim this faith and trust in Jesus? Will you serve God by being part of the church? Check the flow…is the Holy Spirit flowing?

There’s a part of me that wants to warn them about the flow. If the Holy Spirit is flowing, you aren’t safe! You will be drawn in and swept into places that you never imagined. God will call you to love people that you aren’t sure you like. You will have to give. You will have to forgive.

Andrew, Elizabeth, Johnny, Max and Megan have checked the flow. And they want to get in!

I hope that you’ll join me on Sunday morning. We’ll meet at Jones Bridge Park at 9:30 for a baptism and remembrance of baptism. Then the confirmation class will lead us in worship at 10:30. They will make promises to God and to the church. We will make promises to help them live out these promises. Bring a dish; you will want to celebrate with them at the covered dish lunch afterwards!

Until then, I will keep checking the water levels of the Chattahoochee. Usually they don’t announce the weekend water release schedule until late afternoon on Friday. But in the same way that I push an elevator button multiple times, I keep calling to check the flow. As soon as we know the flow, we’ll send an email, change the church website, and change the church answering machine message.  If the river level is too high, we have permission to use the beach at Berkeley Lake.

No matter the level of water that is flowing in the Chattahoochee, the Holy Spirit is flowing already in these young lives. Come on Sunday, you’ll want to check out that flow and see it for yourself.

I’ll see you this Sunday,
Pastor Cyndi

Preschool News

Dear Friends,

Can you believe this is our last week of school? Our oldest group, lovingly referred to as our Seniors, have the same disease every other senior in the United States has – senioritis! And we’ve got it bad. You’d think there were 2 dozen graduating instead of one. I guess we can call them the Dirty Dozen this week.

For the first time in my memory, a Senior has comprehended what graduation means. Today, Violet burst into tears when it became clear that she would be saying good bye to her classmates, teachers, and the school. It was a heart-wrenching moment seeing a little one understand what it means to say good bye.

Which leads me to a thought and the most important piece of advice I can offer anyone. Don’t forget the importance of saying good bye with your whole heart. One of these “See you tomorrow” farewells leaves everyone without closure. Take the time and feel the emotion of actually saying good bye and thank you. Take this opportunity to teach a child what it means to move on. It is a really tough lesson, but one that can be taught with love and kindness.

Having said that, look at the picture we had in sanctuary today. We got to see the silhouette of the man who is working on our stained glass windows. It is almost ghostly as we see this vision – almost a voice from those who went before us, who toiled that a church would be built to the glory of God, so all who entered Mt. Carmel would be reminded of the beauty of our world and the family who went before us.

Aren’t we fortunate to be able to worship in a place built from love? I am always transported to a quiet place in my soul when I enter the sanctuary. Thanks to all who went before us and to those who work to keep our church beautiful.

In joy and love,
Lorrie

MUST Ministry Lunch Program

Mt. Carmel will be participating in the MUST Summer Lunch program again this year, providing lunches to local children who may not have lunch during the summer. This year we will provide and assemble all the lunches for the week of June 16th through June 20th. This means making 200 sandwiches a day and filling 1000 lunch bags for the week!  It’s a big undertaking, but we can do it with your help.

Volunteers will be needed after 11:00 worship on Sunday, June 15th (lunch will be provided) to help fill lunch bags with juice boxes, something salty (chips, pretzels, etc.) and a sweet (cookies, granola bars, etc.)  We’ll fill as many bags as we can at that time, adding the fresh sandwiches each day.

We’ll also need volunteers to make sandwiches Monday through Friday and add them to the bags so they can be delivered at 11:00 to the church that will be taking them to the apartment complexes. We’ll need to be at the Fellowship Hall about 9 or 9:30 a.m.

Donations of juice boxes, snack-size bags of chips, pretzels and cookies or granola bars, peanut butter crackers, etc. will also be needed to help fill the 1000 lunch bags. Please leave these items in the kitchen marked MUST Lunch program. We’ll also need peanut butter, jelly, bologna, cheese and bread the week of June 15 to make the sandwiches each day.

If you would be willing to volunteer your time on Sunday the 15th or any morning that week, please mark the back of the Connect Card in Sunday bulletins, call Joanne Ragon (770-271-7350) or Suzanne in the church office. Your help will be appreciated!

Family Promise Hosting - July 13 - 27

This will be our 3rd summer of working with Family Promise of Gwinnett (http://familypromisegwinnett.org/) to serve homeless families who are transitioning out of homelessness. We use our preschool rooms during the summer as guest bedrooms for up to 4 families with children.

We will be hosting our Family Promise guests for 2 weeks, back to back this summer. This is a great opportunity to serve. We will be sharing more info and details over the next few weeks.

Family Promise & Safe Sanctuary Training
Volunteers who will be working "hands on" with our guest families need to satisfy our Safe Sanctuary policy. Marian Long is offering Safe Sanctuary training in the beginning of her VBS training classes -- see her article above for date and times.

We will let those of you who helped "hands on" in years past know if you need to renew your Safe Sanctuary training in a separate email. We will also have a later Safe Sanctuary training session closer to the dates -- but if you know you need the training, please do it now if your schedule allows.
