Means of Grace

This Sunday is promotion Sunday. We will invite the third graders to come forward and Ms. Marian will give each child a new Bible. In the weeks to come, their Sunday School classes will focus on the parts of the Bible and how God still speaks through scripture today.

I hope they read their Bibles. Don’t you?

After the children’s time, all of our children will hear about Operation Christmas Child, and learn of children who don’t have much. They will learn that for some children, a pair of clippers or a needle and thread is precious. For some children, a rubber ball is the only toy. Then they will go upstairs and fill shoeboxes with toys and small helpful items. Then they will pray over each box, asking God’s care for those who will receive the boxes.

This Sunday we are teaching our children to listen for God to speak through scripture. We are teaching them to share God’s love, even to neighbors they will never meet in person. We are teaching them to pray. It’s something I hope for every Sunday…that children of every age will hear God speaking through scripture…that children of every age will show God’s love in our giving…that children of every age will grow in prayer.

Thank you for bringing your children and grandchildren, so that they too will know God working in their lives through these means of grace.

Thank you for bringing you. For you are a precious child of God, too.

I’ll see you this Sunday,
Pastor Cyndi

Mt. Carmel Says Good-Bye
to Kaylen Short
It was announced on Sunday that our current Youth Director, Kaylen Short, would be leaving Mt. Carmel. This is his last week with us.

While we are sad to see Kaylen go and he will be missed, we are happy that he has been offered the opportunity to be the pastor of another church! This is a good step for Kaylen and we wish him all the best.

Family Promise Thank You

Make that an all uppercase THANK YOU! for hosting our Family Promise guests this summer. Between your normal summer activities you made time to make a huge difference in our 3 weeks of hosting. You made a difference with our 7 families -- 28 people you've witnessed to.

The new families were in awe of how much work it took to convert our downstairs to comfortable private rooms and community areas for them. Many commented on your gracious and welcoming hospitality and how meaningful it was to them.

I hope you were as blessed as we were.

Thank you,
Ed, Lila, Lorrie, Marianne

Sunday School:

This coming Sunday is Promotion Sunday and our third graders and others will receive their Bibles from Mt. Carmel at the 9:30 service.

Sunday School Teachers Meeting:

August 11 at 10:45 in Room 112/114

We will review new curriculum materials and schedules for teaching.

Learning to Use My Bible:

Third through Fifth Graders - Aug. 8 - Oct. 20

Our Third through Fifth Graders will learn basic Bible skills with their new and old Bibles for the next few weeks. This is a step by step approach that opens the Bible’s message to children for a lifelong faith journey. Bring your new Bibles or your favorite old one to class for these center based special lessons.

Thank You!

Thank you from Children’s Ministries for supporting the Salad and Quesadilla lunch on August 4 and a special thank you to all who helped put it together. Your salads and desserts and physical help were wonderful!

Do you know this person?

He will be visiting Mt. Carmel soon!
Picture of Jay Hodges 4
First hint: When he first moved to Norcross, he left the suburbs for "the country." Here he learned to hunt and fish.

Second hint:
He was friends with Billy Grogan. Billy's family gave him his first experience milking a cow!

Third hint:
At age 16, he worked for Dorsey Bolton for the summer. At that time he decided he had to do something else in life other than build houses!

Yard Sale for NCM - September 21

Mark your calendars!
On September 21st, the Transformer Sunday school class is coordinating a church-wide garage sale on the front lawn of the church (or Fellowship Hall in case of rain). All proceeds from the garage sale will benefit Norcross Cooperative Ministry’s Restoring Hope program.

What is “Restoring Hope!”?
The Norcross Cooperative Ministry will work closely with a minimum of 100 families over the next five years to help them break the cycle of poverty and return to a productive lifestyle. These clients will receive expanded services, such as housing assistance, education programs, money management and employment preparation.

NCM will also increase food distribution and emergency housing and begin to provide non-food items to families in need. Food bags distributed by NCM currently have about a four or five day food supply. NCM would like to give a week’s worth of food.

How YOU can help…
You can volunteer to help with the actual garage sale by helping us set-up or sell the donated items. We will have a sign-up sheet closer to the event for you to indicate how you can help. Also, start thinking about items you can donate to the garage sale. Bring these items to the Fellowship Hall beginning September 16th. If you have large items that you need picked up, please contact Sam Tapley at 770/833-0091 (e-mail spt404@hotmail.com) or Ed McDonald at 678/983-5588 (e-mail edmacmo@gmail.com). We hope you will also come out and shop with us on September 21st.

We will also be selling hot dogs, chips, drinks and baked goods. If you can provide any of these items, you can indicate that on the sign-up sheet. Proceeds from all food sales will benefit the Mt. Carmel UMC general operating fund.

At our last garage sale, we made enough money to build four houses for families in Nicaragua! It is exciting to be able to do something that truly transforms lives and to help those in need in our immediate area.

We sincerely thank you for your support in the past, and hope you will support this church-wide effort in some way on September 21st.
