Even if You Throw it in the Toilet

I was pregnant the first time I heard the story, so I used that as an excuse. All those extra hormones made me cry!

I immediately went to the book store and ordered a copy to read to Matt. Every time I read it aloud Matt would look me in the eyes to see if I was crying.

When we read stories, he rarely asked for this book. When I picked it out he never said no to hearing it again. Later, he gave away and sold in garage sales his copies of Cat in the Hat and Runaway Bunny. Even though he was too old to have his mother read the book, he kept it, hidden away in a drawer under his underwear and socks.

The book is Love You Forever, by Robert Munsch. I won’t spoil the story by telling you the ending—and making you cry—but will share with you Matt’s favorite picture. Notice that the little boy holds a watch up and smiles. He is about to flush his mother’s watch down the toilet.

The boy pulls all the books off the shelves, pulls all the food out of the refrigerator, streams toilet paper all through the house…each night his mother sings a lullaby:
I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living
My baby you’ll be.

On Sunday I asked you to read Psalm 139:1-18 each day. What do you think of when you read this? Today as I read it, I thought of God watching me. I wondered if God ever feels like the mother in the book—especially when she says in exasperation “this kid is driving me CRAZY!”

What I love about the is that it doesn’t matter what the kid does. Every night she sings to him that lullaby, “I’ll love you forever.”

Take time to read through the passage again. It doesn’t matter if today you ran through the house streaming toilet paper…or always seem to put the toilet paper on the roller in the wrong direction. It doesn’t matter if you flushed the watch—or the iphone—in the toilet.

Know who you are, God’s beloved. In your baptism, the heavens opened, and God’ voice rang out. This is my beloved child. I will love you forever.

Read the Psalm. In silence, take time to revel in God’s love song to you. In the quiet each day, know this truth for yourself. God loves you forever.

I'll see you this Sunday,
Pastor Cyndi

Congratulations to Josh and Katie Riviere on Josh's baptism, and also that of their daughter Emory.

New UMW "Woman of the Year!"

The Mt. Carmel United Methodist Women were happy to crown Vicki Walden as their 2014 "Woman of the Year" at a brunch in her honor on Sunday!

The Woman of the Year is someone who has gone above and beyond in her service to the church in the past year, and Vicki certainly fits that description!

Thank you Vicki and congratulations!

Stained Glass Window Protection

The Trustees announce that in the coming weeks, work will begin to replace the old and cloudy exterior protection of our stained glass windows.

We’re past due for this necessary maintenance work and the new protective glass will not cloud up like the existing protection, so we’ll be able to enjoy our beautiful stained glass windows for years to come! As a result, they will also present a more inviting exterior to the community.

Thank you for your patience during this work, which will last 3 weeks or so, weather permitting.

Altar Flowers

Each Sunday, the flowers on the altar are prepared by one of our talented volunteers and are an important part of our weekly worship service.

These flowers may be purchased by members of the congregation, to be listed in the bulletin in honor or in memory of a loved one.  The flowers may then be taken by the purchaser after the 11:00 service.

If you would like to place altar flowers in honor or memory of someone, please sign up on the Connect Card in your Sunday bulletin, or contact the church office.

The cost of an arrangement is $40.00 which may be dropped into the offering plate or by the office. Thank you!

Children's Ministry News

Sunday School:
We are continuing our journey through the New Testament by hearing the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman in John 4:1-42. Jesus talks to the woman at the well and that encounter with Jesus changes her in a big way. The key verse is John 4: 24 in which Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that those who worship God must “worship in spirit and truth.”

From the Preschool

Dear Friends,

Well, has the weather gotten to you yet? If not, just wait a couple of minutes and it will change. We all have cabin fever and do our best to get outdoors when the weather is beautiful but on the days when the weather is too cold or windy, we have to tough it out inside. We are so thankful for a huge Fellowship Hall in which to run around. We would surely go around the bend without it!

In-house, alumni, and church registration for the fall is this Wednesday and Thursday following carpool in Fellowship Hall. Just go to the hall with the completed paperwork, find your child’s folder on the table marked with the class he will be in NEXT year, add the new paperwork, then drop it off with a check for registration on the table near the door. If you are registering a new child, September tuition is also due. I will be there to answer any questions you may have.

Community registration is Monday, February 3 at 9:00 AM in Fellowship Hall. If you bring a new family to the school, your child’s registration fee will be waived. Win-win.

Geof Johnson will be with us on Thursday, January 30 at 10:30 in Fellowship Hall. If your child is not scheduled on Thursday, you are still invited to join the fun. You can come to sanctuary if you like than head over to the FH for the program. The more the merrier!

We are so thankful to have a place like Mt. Carmel to learn and grow. We hope you will extend an invitation to new families and help us grow the clan!

In joy and love,

Men's Retreat: Jan. 31 - Feb. 2

All men of the church are invited to attend the Mt. Carmel Men's Retreat to Amicalola Falls. This will be a time of study, fun and fellowship in the great outdoors!

Everyone will arrange carpooling among themselves. Contact Craig German  -  770-967-8733, or the church office for more information.
