You Have a String Hanging Out

It bothered me most of the afternoon. What is that? Finally, I confronted my brother. You have a string hanging out! What is that?

Turns out it wasn’t just one string, but 7 strings braided together. And he has four of them that he wears.

John explained that he is trying to think of God more often. In Deuteronomy 22:12, God commands the Israelites to wear tzitzit, or tassels, on the four corners of their garments. Whenever he sees the tassels, John remembers to have a prayerful attitude. It doesn’t matter if he is working or driving. Any time is an opportunity to tell God, “thank you for your presence in this circumstance.”

Over time, I’ve used a number of tools to remind me to be in prayer. For several of my years as a professor, I set my computer screensaver to a picture of Psalm 139. When I would turn back to the computer, there was the reminder that God is with you no matter what. On at least one occasion, seeing that screen saver out of the corner of my eye kept me from saying something harsh. I needed the reminder that God was with me, even in my office.

This Sunday we met John Wesley and heard about the “methodical” ways he and his friends tried to be open to God’s grace. They prayed in the mornings, fasted on Wednesdays and Fridays, met together to study scripture, and together visited the prisons and ministered to children. They were ridiculed by others for being so methodical—so Methodist—in their faith! This is how the Methodist connection began.

Most of us are methodical in some area of life. I start each week with a checklist of what needs to be done. I water the tomato plants (I am an optimist.) I brush my teeth before going to bed.

John Wesley reminds that we need to be methodical and intentional in our spiritual lives, too.

How are you methodical? Do you keep something in your car so that in the frustration of rush-hour traffic you will remember that God is with you? Do you have a time each day, just as sure as brushing your teeth, in which you will be still and open to God?

I’ll see you this Sunday,
Pastor Cyndi

Welcome Our New District Superintendent!

Dear Pastors and Laity:

What a joy and a privilege it is for me to invite you to come and celebrate the arrival of our new District Superintendent family, Doug and Debbie Thrasher!

Join me with joy and excitement for a “come and go” gathering to welcome them.

The event will be from 3-5 pm on Sunday, June 29 at the Chamblee 1st UMC.

On behalf of the District Committee on Superintendency, I thank you in advance for your engagement to help Doug and Debbie feel right at home in the AROS District.

Blessings and Peace,
Steve Wood
Chair, District Committee on Superintendency

Family Promise 2014!

This summer we will once again be a host church in the Gwinnett County Family Promise program. We will host pre-screened homeless families in our church for two weeks, providing them with housing, food, fellowship, and most importantly, love. This is a time for us to model our Christian witness by serving others here within our church home.

We will host our Family Promise guests from July 13 until July 27 and we have jobs for EVERYONE!

Some jobs (dinner host, overnight host, weekend day host, van driver) need some instruction, and those interacting with our guests need Safe Sanctuary training, so a session is scheduled for Sunday, June 29th - Safe Sanctuary at 12:30 and Family Promise training at 1:00.  (after the combined worship service and lunch)

Other jobs need no training at all!  (meal provider, setup, tear down, laundry angel)

For more specifics, see the Sunday bulletin insert or contact Ed McDonald / 678-983-5588.

To sign up, please see the sign-up board in the foyer, or sign up online at http://bit.ly/FP2014July13  or  http://bit.lyFP2014July20.

Thank you!

Everyone is asked to bring a "picnic-type" side dish or dessert to share.

And if you think your HOMEMADE ICE CREAM is the BEST there is, you'd better bring a freezer-full for the contest after lunch.

Who knows, you may win the 'GOLDEN SCOOP AWARD!"

(If you plan to bring homemade ice cream, please let us know in the church office so we can plan the contest!)

Mark your calendar for this fun summer Sunday!

Thank You Very Much!

(A portion of a note received at Mt. Carmel recently)

Dear Mt. Carmel UMC family,

I cannot begin to express enough how grateful I am to your church, your VBS helpers and your congregation.

I was involved in the car accident on June 4th outside the church and your VBS helper (I wish so much I could remember her name!) saw my kids crying and helped them (and me!) be brave and calm down and walked them over to your VBS program, where they spent the couple of hours it took to resolve the incident.

Your helpers came out to update me on my kids and also offered help and refreshments to the other people involved.

I thank God for you everyday since! Such a disguised (well, obvious!) blessing to have the incident on your VBS week so my kids can be so loved and cared for!  They loved their time there and their WEIRD ANIMAL hats!

... with overwhelming thanks and love!
Erica
