Jesus Loves Mickey Mouse

My friend Kathy sings Jesus Loves Me to her son every night at bedtime. When she gets to the chorus, she pauses so he can say “me.” Imagine how sweet that must be, to hear her say, “yes, Jesus loves” and his voice proudly chiming in “me.”

But last week when she was singing with him, when she paused after "yes, Jesus loves …" he did not chime in with “me.” He was thoughtfully silent. Then he smiled and said, “Mickey Mouse.”

I told this story to the Preschoolers yesterday, and they rolled in the floor giggling. We wondered if Jesus loves Mickey Mouse. We decided that since Jesus loves everyone, maybe Jesus loves Mickey Mouse.

So we sang Jesus loves “me” and first they all filled in “me” as loud as they could.

We sang Jesus loves “Mickey Mouse” and we all filled in “Mickey Mouse.” They were even louder as they said Mickey Mouse.

But the loudest was when we changed the words one more time. The third time we sang Jesus loves YOU, and we all pointed to someone else in the room and very loudly exclaimed “YOU!”

Yes, Jesus loves YOU!
Yes, Jesus loves YOU!
Yes, Jesus loves YOU!
For the Bible tells me so.

We try to do that as a church, don’t we? On Sunday, someone comes in late and we wave them over to sit next to us on a pew, hand them a hymnal already turned to the right page, and it’s a way to say “Yes, Jesus loves YOU!”

On Wednesday nights the choir and 9:30 musicians practice an anthem or song, and these rehearsals allow them to give their best. Counselors listen as the youth share what's going on in their lives. Sunday School teachers prepare lessons and crafts. In these ways they say over and over, “Yes, Jesus loves YOU!”

In the next few weeks we will hand out hotdogs on Wednesday evenings, pack lunch sacks for school age children in June, and in July turn preschool rooms into bedrooms for the homeless. All this is in order to say to neighbors, “Jesus loves YOU.”

Don't tell my seminary professors that I taught the preschoolers to sing Jesus loves Mickey Mouse. I'm not so certain of that. But that other part -- I'll tell everyone. It is always right to say “Jesus loves YOU!”

I’ll see you this Sunday,
Pastor Cyndi

Children's Ministry

Sunday School:
This week, we follow Paul and Silas as they are in prison. ( Acts 16: 16-34)

Paul and Silas have been beaten, but they continue to pray and sing praises to God. We can pray for each other to have the strength to praise God throughout the week, even when it is hard or stressful.

They will check back in with us a little later!

Please note that there are still a few openings available in all classes for the 2014-2015 school year, so tell your friends and family!

MUST Ministries Summer Lunch Program

Mt. Carmel will be participating in the MUST Summer Lunch program again this year, providing lunches to local children who may not have lunch during the summer. This year we will provide and assemble all the lunches for the week of June 16th through June 20th. This means making 200 sandwiches a day and filling 1000 lunch bags for the week!  It’s a big undertaking, but we can do it with your help.

Volunteers will be needed after 11:00 worship on Sunday, June 15th (lunch will be provided) to help fill lunch bags with juice boxes, something salty (chips, pretzels, etc.) and a sweet (cookies, granola bars, etc.)  We’ll fill as many bags as we can at that time, adding the fresh sandwiches each day.

We’ll also need volunteers to make sandwiches Monday through Friday and add them to the bags so they can be delivered at 11:00 to the church that will be taking them to the apartment complexes. We’ll need to be at the Fellowship Hall about 9 or 9:30 a.m.

Donations of juice boxes, snack-size bags of chips, pretzels and cookies or granola bars, peanut butter crackers, etc. will also be needed to help fill the 1000 lunch bags. Please leave these items in the kitchen marked MUST Lunch program. We’ll also need peanut butter, jelly, bologna, cheese and bread the week of June 15 to make the sandwiches each day.

If you would be willing to volunteer your time on Sunday the 15th or any morning that week, please mark the back of the Connect Card in Sunday bulletins, call Joanne Ragon (770-271-7350) or Suzanne in the church office. Your help will be appreciated!

Outreach Focus

"Stamp Out Hunger" on Saturday, May 10th
(benefits Norcross Cooperative Ministry)

On Saturday, May 10th, the US Postal Service is partnering with the National Association of Letter Carriers to sponsor "Stamp Out Hunger," the nation's largest single-day food drive.

Local letter carriers will collect food on this day and deliver them to neighborhood food banks. All food items collected in the Norcross and Peachtree Corners area will be delivered to the Norcross Cooperative Ministry (NCM) and you can help!

How to Help: Simply place bags filled with non-perishable food items next to your mailbox and your letter carrier will pick them up. It's that easy! For more information, click here. Stamp Out Hunger!

Their NAME Tells ALL!

What does the name “MedShare” make you think of? This nonprofit takes discarded (often brand new!) MEDical supplies and equipment headed for a US landfill and instead SHARES it with some of the poorest in the world—truly “the least of these” Jesus talks about! They’ve distributed freely $100 million dollars of medical goods and kept 2 million cubic feet out of our landfills—serving a sorely needed dual purpose.

MedShare is located in Decatur and offers volunteer opportunities if you would like to help out. Volunteers come daily to do the “pre-sorting” of the huge variety of medical donations (see photo of volunteers sorting.) You can read more about MedShare at MedShare.org and individuals can volunteer at

One last note about MedShare—they are also a Distribution Partner for PETs – the all terrain hand cranked three-wheel carts for those needing mobility in the developing countries (see photo of PET they distributed.)

Family Promise Hosting - July 13 - 27

This will be our 3rd summer of working with Family Promise of Gwinnett (http://familypromisegwinnett.org/) to serve homeless families who are transitioning out of homelessness. We use our preschool rooms during the summer as guest bedrooms for up to 4 families with children.

We will be hosting our Family Promise guests for 2 weeks, back to back this summer. This is a great opportunity to serve. We will be sharing more info and details over the next few weeks.

Family Promise & Safe Sanctuary Training
Volunteers who will be working "hands on" with our guest families need to satisfy our Safe Sanctuary policy. Marian Long is offering Safe Sanctuary training in the beginning of her VBS training classes -- see her article above for date and times.

We will let those of you who helped "hands on" in years past know if you need to renew your Safe Sanctuary training in a separate email. We will also have a later Safe Sanctuary training session closer to the dates -- but if you know you need the training, please do it now if your schedule allows.
