AIA Volunteers Renovate Seven Classrooms While in Tanzania

Schools in Africa

In July, leaders and volunteers from Achieve in Africa traveled to Tanzania and visited Olasiti village outside of Arusha, in northern Tanzania, and Ulolela village outside of Mbinga in southern Tanzania.

While in Olasiti village, volunteers renovated seven classrooms by reinforcing the base of the walls with cement to avoid flooding, digging trenches to route rainwater away, and painting the outside of the classrooms. Achieve in Africa volunteers also repaired a damaged classroom

that was unusable by replacing the concrete  Olasiti 1 2

floor, fixing cracked walls, and repainting the classroom inside and out.

The group then traveled to Ulolela village, where they celebrated the opening of the Community Learning Center (CLC), met with village leaders, visited a nearby secondary school, and
conducted a baseline survey of students' interest and knowledge of topics to be taught at the CLC. To see more photos from our trip, check out our blog post.

New School, Classroom by Classroom

Our focus now is to provide Olasiti village with a Secondary School. The village has managed to build two classrooms from money raised by taxes; however, additional funding is critically needed. So far, we have also funded the construction of two classrooms and a small office. But, four classrooms is not enough to accommodate all student. Twenty additional classrooms and 32 bathrooms are needed to complete the school. The cost of a classroom is $10,000 and the cost of a bathroom is $500.

Solar Panels Africa   AIA volunteers visited Ulolela village in southern Tanzania for the opening of the Community Learning Center (CLC). The solar panels were installed on the roof (at right), and now power the CLC, which is the only building in the village with electricity. Classes in the CLC will focus on self empowerment, college and career preparation, business fundamentals, and HIV/AIDS awareness.
