Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Dear SCBC Members, Friends, and Partners,

It is with some darn intense emotions that I write to inform you that, after 5 years with Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, I’m moving on. Working here has been the most rewarding work I’ve been lucky enough to do, and my time here has been a tremendous period of growth, learning, and fun. I have been constantly impressed by the passion, engagement, generosity, capability, and kindness of SCBC's membership, volunteers, board, staff, and community partners. It has been nothing short of an honor to serve you in my role as Outreach Director. Thank you for being so fantastic.

Stepping down from my staff position at SCBC is not easy: I am invested deeply in the mission of this organization and its success! But the time has come for me to take on a new role, and to bring some new energy into SCBC. I will continue to be a member, volunteer, supporter, cheerleader, donor, etc!

SCBC today will begin its search for a new Outreach Director, and Gary and I wanted to start with you! Who is more engaged in local bicycling issues than the SCBC membership? Perhaps you've been waiting for years for a position to become available here. If so, please apply! The job description appears below.

I will remain on staff until the end of March, during which time it will be my task to support our new Outreach Director in getting oriented and up to speed on their rad new job. On April 1st, I'll be off on my new adventure (I'm staying in Sonoma County, of course).

Thank you so much for all you to to support bicycling in Sonoma County. I've loved working with you!

Happy pedaling,

Sandra Lupien

Outreach Director -- Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition

About the Organization:
Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition (SCBC) is a dynamic, 501 (c)(3) non‐profit organization working to make
Sonoma County the very best place for everyone to ride a bicycle. Since 2001, SCBC’s mission to
promote bicycling for transportation and recreation has helped create better facilities, visionary plans
for more facilities, and greater awareness and enthusiasm for bicycling. Our small staff of dedicated and
passionate professionals work together in our Santa Rosa office (and sometimes from home –
remember, we’re flexible!).

About the Outreach Director:
SCBC is now seeking an awesome Outreach Director. This is a key management position at Sonoma
County Bicycle Coalition and is responsible for:

Coordinating fun, Sonoma County‐flavored events to celebrate and promote bicycling. This includes all
aspects of event planning, including: envisioning the event and creating a plan to make it come to life;
recruiting sponsors, ensuring appropriate sponsor acknowledgment, maintaining relationships with
sponsors; scouting locations; working with appropriate agencies to acquire permits; coordinating and
directing community partners; recruiting, training, and managing volunteers; promoting the event
through social media, advertising, partnerships with other agencies, etc. SCBC’s annual events include:
Sonoma County Bicycle Expo, I Bike Sonoma County Century, Bike to Work Day/National Bike Month,
Annual Membership Dinner/Election, Volunteer Appreciation Party, and other events, as needed.

Managing SCBC’s Valet Bicycle Parking Program. This includes marketing the program to event
planners, negotiating contracts, overseeing bike parking staff, coordinating bike parking volunteers, etc.

Creating compelling communications. This includes writing and distributing the SCBC e‐updates (about
twice monthly), creating and disseminating action alerts, writing web content and maintaining website,
administering Facebook, Twitter, and other social media.

Growing our membership. This task is a new addition to this position, as it is SCBC’s goal to double our
membership in 2013. We’re seeking someone to design a comprehensive membership development and
sell, sell, sell!

About the ideal candidate:
Our ideal Outreach Director LOVES bicycling for transportation and/or recreation, and wants to share
that love with everyone. If this is not you, you’re not the right fit. If you are a bike evangelist, read on.
You might just be our ideal match if you:
• Are super‐smart, creative as heck, resourceful, quick‐on‐the‐uptake;
• Are friendly, love people, know how to network and build relationships;
• Are not afraid to ask for sponsorship money, or, if you are afraid, you love to conquer your fears
and charge ahead;
• Are self‐directed and willing to take direction, collaborative and independent;
• Are bored if you’re not multi‐tasking;
• Like to ask questions and conduct research to find the answers you need;
• Are a fast, accurate, persuasive writer, who understands audience, tone, and purpose;
• Have experience planning events for thousands of people, hundreds of people, dozens of
people;
• Have coordinated volunteers, or been a volunteer and know what helps volunteers succeed;
• Love the idea of selling bicycling and SCBC to the general public and prospective members;
• Love to be in charge of a project – both the big picture and the details;
• Know how to do a whole lot with relatively few resources (and realize that by growing the
membership, you’ll be creating more resources!);
• Are excited about the idea of working at SCBC for at least two years;
• Ready to hit the ground running (er, pedaling) and take on several projects in process (you’ll be
trained by the out‐going Outreach Director); and
• Are able to join SCBC half time no later than March 4th for training and transition to full‐time by
April 1st.

In addition, our ideal Outreach Director would be bilingual, as it is a key priority for SCBC to better serve
Sonoma County’s Spanish‐speaking community.

The ideal combination of education and experience and enthusiasm is too subjective to try to quantify. If
you think you’re the person for this job, please apply by sending an up‐to‐date resume, a compelling
cover letter, and three references to Gary Helfrich, our Executive Director, at gary@bikesonoma.org.

Salary: $40 ‐ $50K (exempt) annually DOE
Benefits: Paid Holidays and Vacation, Casual & Flexible Work Environment, and work that will make you
feel great!
