Women: Get Skills this Saturday!
February 2nd at County of Sonoma Administration Center, Administration Drive and Ventura, at the PRMD Parking lot
Bicycle Handling Skills with Laurel Green. Laurel is a
teacher by profession, and also is a an elite amateur racer. She’s a coach as
well, and runs the Early Bird Women’s cycling team in Sonoma County. Laurel
loves to teach women of all levels of experience how to handle their bikes –
balance, turning, steering, pedaling, shifting – to help them enjoy riding even
more. We will offer two sections (25 spots available in each): 9 a.m. – noon OR
1:00 p.m. – 4:00. Participants will need to bring their bikes and be prepared
to ride. The class fee is $25. See the attached flyer for more details. RSVP as
soon as possible and indicate whether you’ll attend the morning or the
afternoon session. Rain will cancel, so we’ll be setting an April rain date as
well.
RSVP now to Sandra@BikeSonoma.org.
NOTE: Our next Biker Chicks ride with Supervisor Zane is February 10th. Click here for info.
SCBC Members Eat, Drink, Elect New Board, Adopts New by-laws
On Friday, January 25th, 168 SCBC members turned up at Sebastopol Community Center for the SCBC Annual Membership Dinner and Election. The SCBC staff was thrilled to see so many of you there, and we enjoyed our conversations with you. If you weren't there, here's what you missed:
1. Eating and Drinking: Fabulous chili, salad, and cornbread, prepared by volunteer Karen Donaghy and a crew of SCBC Board members who all pitched in in various ways. Vicki Duggan made 400 cookies, which were devoured. Wine was donated by Ravenswood, Windsor Oaks Winery, and beer by Lagunitas.
2. Speechifying: Thanks to Sebastopol City Councilmember Patrick Slayter for his eloquent remarks about why we ride, and to Supervisor Shirlee Zane for her heartfelt comments about Biker Chicks and overall traffic safety. SCBC staff members Tina Panza, Sandra Lupien, and Gary Helfrich reported on Safe Routes to School, the SCBC year-in-review, and the SCBC year-to-come, respectively.
3. Voting: The members present passed new by laws, drafted by the SCBC Board in order to streamline operations, and modernize our elections to include more members. And, we elected a new Board of Directors: Nabeel Al Shamma Tom Bahning Vicki Duggan Eric Eisenhart Janice Eunice Tom Helm Russ McCracken (new) Jeffrey Montague Lisa Santos (new) Geoffrey Smith (new)
4. Riding: SCBC Board Member and Street Skills instructor Tom Helm led a round trip group ride from Santa Rosa to the meeting. Thanks to Tom, and to volunteers Barbara Moulton and Jon Dick for assisting him!
5. Tunes: Local band "The Keepers" played sweet renditions of classic songs to set the mood. Thanks to the band -- they donated their services!
6. Volunteering: At least two dozen people helped make the event happen by setting up, serving drinks, helping to tear down and clean up, and even helping to haul away gear at the end of the night. Thank you so much! If you missed the event last Friday, we hope you'll make it a point to attend next year. The annual membership dinner and election is a great place to meet other bike people and get up to date on what's happening with SCBC! ONE MORE CHANCE TO HELP: On Wednesday, January 30th in the afternoon, SCBC needs a crew of 3-4 people to help with a final clean-up task. We borrowed dishes for the event from Green Mary (thanks, Mary!); they've been washed, but need to be run through a commercial washer in Santa Rosa to sanitize them. We have a plan, but not the personnel. Contact Sandra@BikeSonoma.org or at 545-0153 to help. Thank you!
Safe Routes Needs You!
SCBC’s Safe
Routes to School program is always in need of Volunteers who love working with
kids and bikes.
Our Spring
Bike Rodeos are coming up. All school day events are from about 7:30 -
3:30. We fit helmets, and set-up the Rodeo course in the morning, and
sometimes help a bike shop wrench on bikes. This all happens until about
10am.
Then we hold
2 to 3 Gym-class style Rodeos, where 4th grade students get to practice their
bike skills on 4 different black-top courses. We use volunteers to help
direct the students and help students who are learning to ride.
On Weekend
Events, like the Bike Swaps, the days will run from 8am to 3pm. There is
always need for help with the same tasks, and we also ask for lots of skilled
wrenchers to get through the bikes on these days. You will need your own
tools, and stand if you have one.
Anyone
interested in working with students during the school day should submit
fingerprinting for a background check. If you are interested, please
contact Michelle Nikolayew , SRTS Education Manager and Rodeo Coordinator, at coachmic@myway.com
for more information, and to receive a list of dates (you do NOT need to be at any event
all day long, but you certainly can be: we need the most help during the
morning set-up times).
Working with Safe Routes is fun and rewarding! Thanks for your consideration!
