Bike Month -- the first half
May 10th, Bike to Work Day, was a blast, with thousands of Sonoma
County folks getting out and pedaling for transportation. With 31
Energizer Stations and 7 Bike Home Celebrations, Sonoma County bike
commuters (and errand-runners) had more options than ever before.
None of this would have been possible without a massive community
effort. Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition thanks the dozens of businesses
and organizations that dedicated staff and resources to host all those
morning Energizer Stations and the companies that donated food and
beverages to stock them.
We thank our Bike Home Celebration hosts: Trek Store Santa Rosa, KRUSH/City of Santa Rosa, Windsor Bicycle Center, Dempsey's in Petaluma, Railroad Station Bar & Grill in Cloverdale, and in Sonoma: MacArthur Place Inn and Spa, and The Epicurean Connection.
We thank our Bike to Work Day 2012 Sponsors.
And, we thank the dozens of volunteers who pitched in not just on
Bike to Work Day, but to prepare for the event, to park bikes at other
events this month, and did lots of other important things. Thanks to them, SCBC:
- Parked 73 bikes at The Human Race on May 5th
- Sold raffle tickets at Wine Country Century,
raising $2,000
- Sold and poured about 1,000 beers at Wine
Country Century, raising $5,000
- Taught 10 women how to fix a flat tire and lube
a bicycle chain before the May 6th Biker Chicks ride

- Parked 63 bikes at the KRUSH concert at Courthouse
Square on May 10th

If you have pictures or videos from Bike to Work Day or from the first couple of weeks of Bike Month, please post them on Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition's Facebook page so everyone can see what was happening near you.
We hope you'll keep pedaling throughout the month, and continue to use your bike for everyday transportation year-round!
Keep on logging those miles in the Team Bike Challenge.
Ride Mombo's to Mombo's this Saturday, May 19th
One minute can change the future for bikes
Folks, it's that time again. Congress is back in session and is in conference on the Federal Transportation Bill. There is a very effective movement to eliminate funding for bike paths, bike lanes, sidewalks, overcrossings -- basically, the things our community needs to make biking and walking safer and more accessible for everyone. Please act now: Your efforts have already paid off -- in March the Senate passed its version of a transportation bill that included the Cardin-Cochoran amendment, which does a lot to protect the funding we need. Help keep the pressure on... visit this link and ask Congress to preserve funding for biking and walking. It only takes a minute to do this, and could make all the difference to our bicycling future in Sonoma County. Email Sandra@BikeSonoma.org to let us know you've send your messages. Thanks!
Ride Sonoma County Backroad Challenge - May 19
Organized by Petaluma Sunrise Rotary, a supporter of the Petaluma Sebastopol Trail.
This beautiful ride, which starts/finishes in Petaluma at Lagunitas
Brewing, offers 3 breathtaking routes -- something for riders of most
levels.
For a relaxed, not-too-hilly ride, try the 35 mile loop.
Want something longer, and more challenging?
The 70 mile route features about 2,800 feet of elevation gain.
If you're up for the century (well, almost -- it's 99 miles), this one's extra-special.
Each ride ends back at Lagunitas with great food, music, vendors, and
of course, fabulous beer! And, Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition will be
there to park your bike! Showers are even available nearby.
The Sonoma County Backroad Challenge is a fundraiser for the Petaluma
Sunrise Rotary Foundation, which provides financial support to
community groups and projects in the area, including the Petaluma
Sebastopol Trail.

Windsor Bike Skills/Ride Weekend -- June 9 & 10
Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition is partnering with the Town of
Windsor Parks and Recreation Department to present a weekend of bicycle
skills classes for people ages 8 and up. These workshops are designed
for bicycle riders (and would-be riders) who want to enjoy bicycling as
much as possible. If you take the full series, you’ll learn from expert
instructors how to be a safe, visible bike rider, who communicates
clearly with other road users. You’ll also learn how to give your bike a
safety check, and how to change a flat tire. That's all on Saturday, June 9th. Then, on June 10th, test out your new skills on a great, family-friendly ride led by SCBC Executive Director, Gary Helfrich.
Get the full class schedule here.

A Century of Gratitude!
Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition wishes to thank Santa Rosa Cycling Club for its ongoing support. On May 5th, the very day of the Wine Country Century, the Club presented SCBC with its annual $10,000 donation. These funds, which come from proceeds from the Century, provide critical support for SCBC's efforts to make Sonoma County a safer, more accessible place for people of all ages and levels of experience to ride bikes. Thanks, SRCC! In addition to the Club's donation, SCBC also raised $5,000 selling beer at the Wine Country Century. The beer was all donated by Lagunitas Brewing. Finally, SCBC raised $2,000 in its Bianchi Pista raffle at the Century. The lucky winner of the bike was Jasmine Jolly, of Santa Rosa. Thanks to Wine Country Cyclery for donating the bike.
