Board of Supervisors takes takes next step to Protect Us All!

Please plan to attend the Tuesday, March 12th meeting of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors as the Board considers the adoption of an ordinance to prohibit the civil harassment of bicyclists and pedestrians.

The item is Number 32 on the agenda, and will probably come up sometime between 10:30 a.m. and noon. If you can attend to show your support, please email gary@bikesonoma.org to RSVP.

The Board is considering a version of an ordinance based on Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition's proposed Vulnerable User Protection Ordinance. The move represents the County's next step toward adopting new protections for people who walk and bike here; if the Board votes to adopt the ordinance, it will send a strong message: those who harasses people biking and walking will be accountable for their actions.

The County's effort is led by Supervisor Shirlee Zane, who, in November, invited SCBC to make a presentation to the Board about the ordinance. At that meeting, the Board voted unanimously to direct County staff to prepare a version of the ordinance for the Supervisors' consideration.

Since then, County staff has worked to draft an ordinance that works for the County.
There are some differences between the County's proposed ordinance and SCBC's proposed Vulnerable User Protection Ordinance, which was passed by the City of Sebastopol early this year. That's because the laws governing California counties are very specific about what counties can and can't do.

"The County," says Gary Helfrich, SCBC's Executive Director, "has done a remarkable job of crafting a draft ordinance that will truly make a difference for people who ride bikes and walk in Sonoma County. We appreciate the County's commitment to providing real protections for vulnerable users of roads and trails."

Please let the Board of Supervisors know that you support the ordinance prohibiting the civil harassment of bicyclists and pedestrians, March 12th agenda item 32:

Chairman David Rabbitt

Supervisor Shirlee Zane
Supervisor Mike McGuire
Supervisor Efren Carrillo

Supervisor Susan Gorin

Meanwhile, cities throughout Sonoma County are in various stages of considering the Vulnerable User Protection Ordinance. It's scheduled for Healdsburg City Council on May 6th, and we are awaiting word on other city calendars.

Protect Us All is moving ahead! Keep informed and stay involved. Together we're making it happen!

SMART Provides Update on Pathway

_J5V7411

On February 20th, the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) staff provided the agency's Board of Directors with an update on the status of the multi-use pathway that is part of the project. The report came at the request of members of the SMART Board, as well as Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition and our Marin County colleagues.

You can view the presentation by clicking here.

In a nutshell, the SMART presentation described the vision for the pathway, and opportunities SMART is exploring to build the project. SMART has submitted the majority of the pathway project (within the Intial Operating Segment from north Santa Rosa to San Rafael) for federal environmental clearance, an important hurdle for projects that wish to compete for federal funding.

SCBC staff attended the meeting and were glad to see the presentation. In public comments, SCBC urged SMART to make a solid public commitment to completing the MUP by publicizing target dates of completion for various segments of the project.

Calling the mechanically inclined!

Love to wrench? Lend your skills to SCBC's Safe Routes to School program this spring. Between now and May 17th, SCBC is looking for folks with mechanical skills to help fix up donated bikes in preparation for a series of bike swaps aimed at helping pair kids and families with great, rideable bikes. All work takes place at Thursdays-Sundays Community Bikes in Santa Rosa To sign up, contact Michael or Jon at 579-5811 to set up a time to work with them in the shop. Plug in when you can. You'll have a blast, and you'll be a big help! Thank you!
