Steve Norwick
On Sunday, July 8th, about 200 people met at Spreckels Performing Arts
Center in Rohnert Park to ride in memory of
Steve Norwick. Participants
chose from four different routes, led by Dawn Silveira, Gary Helfrich,
Tom Helm, Martin Clinton, Vin Hoagland, and Maria Potter. We were
touched by the great number of people who came out, including Steve's
wife Marthe and his daughter Rebecca.
Read about the ride in the Press Democrat.Meanwhile, on July 13th,
Robert Cowart was back in court for what was to have been his preliminary hearing. However, the judge
ordered Cowart to undergo a psychiatric evaluation within the week, and
to return to court on July 20th at 8:30 a.m. for the preliminary
hearing. He is charged with felony hit and run; the District Attorney
has not yet revised the charges to vehicular manslaughter.
Michael Torckler
On Friday, June 29th, professional cyclist Michael Torckler was
injured badly when he was hit head-on by a car driven by Arthur Ben Yu.
Torckler was descending Pine Flat Road, when Yu, driving uphill,
crossed the center line and collided with Torckler. Yu fled the scene. Torckler has been recovering much more rapidly than expected at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. An international effort to raise funds for Torckler's medical expenses has been launched, and you can
read about it here.
On July 10th, Yu pleaded not
guilty to the following felony charges:
- Stealing a car
- Possession of a stolen car
- Reckless driving resulting in great bodily injury
- Hit-and-run resulting in great bodily injury
He also pleaded not guilty to driving with a suspended licence, a misdemeanor.
Judge Owen set Yu's bail at $85,000, which Yu could not make. He appeared in court again on July 11th, where the judge was to set his preliminary hearing. But, that day, we learned that Michael Torckler is hoping to return
to New Zealand next week. Therefore, the prosecutor in the Arthur Ben Yu
case, must examine Torckler in the hospital with a judge present as
soon as possible.
We'll keep you posted on these cases as they develop.
