The birds & bees of bicycles...
Where do bicycles come from?
It's a question one can't help but ask while marveling at the simple
style of a track bike, the luscious lugs on a custom touring bike, the
many wonders of a hand-built mountain bike.... where does all this
beauty come from? Binary fission? A petri dish? Do bikes hatch from
eggs?
Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition is prepared to blow your mind and
expose to you the source of one of life's deepest mysteries...under the
big top at the Sonoma County Bicycle Expo on August 19th, 2012!
Our VeloGenesis exhibition unites Northern
California bicycle builders and components manufacturers in a
cooperative process that will bring about -- before your astounded eyeballs -- the live birth of at least two
baby bikes . The velo-geek and the
bike-curious alike will find themselves beside themselves (binary
fission?) as they witness this awe-inspiring display.
Bruce Gordon Cycles, Gary Helfrich, Inglis & Retrotec, Raphael Cycles, Rebolledo Cycles, Soulcraft, and SyCip collaborate to create one (maybe two) unique, steel-frame town bike.
Calfee Design solo-builds an amazing bamboo-frame!
Paragon Machine Works donates all components.
Not only do you get to stand witness to this unique spectacle... you have an opportunity to WIN one of these bikes! Here's how it works (pay close attention):
Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition will pre-sell raffle tickets for these bikes. How to purchase tickets:
- Starting Wednesday, August 8th at 9:00 a.m. by calling our
office at 707-545-0153. You will need to pay by credit card (Visa or
Mastercard)
- Visit our booth at the Annadel Mountain Bike Race on Saturday, August 18th
- At My Friend Joe at 1810 Mendocino Avenue in Santa Rosa on the morning of the Expo (August 19th) between 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
- At the Expo site (2nd & E Street in Downtown Santa Rosa) on the
morning of the Expo (August 19th) between 8:00 a.m. - 10 a.m.
The two winning tickets (one bamboo bike, one steel bike)
will be drawn at 10:30 a.m. at the Sonoma County Bicycle Expo on Sunday,
August 19th at 2nd & E Street in Santa Rosa. You must be present to win because these bikes are CUSTOM and you will need to be measured (and anyway, don't you want to see your bike being built??)
Raffle tickets are:
1 ticket for $5 3 tickets for $10 8 tickets for $20
This raffle is a benefit for Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, working to make Sonoma County a safe and accessible place for everyone to ride a bike.
How are you even going to wait for VeloGenesis?

Volunteer at the Sonoma County Bicycle Expo!
A lot of hard work goes into making the Sonoma County Bicycle Expo an
awesome celebration of all things bike. Much of that work is done by
your fellow bicycle lovers who volunteer their time generously to make
sure the event rocks the most. Our volunteer shifts are opportunities
for fun, and we'll reward you with lunch from Whole Foods Market, as
well as beer from New Belgium Brewing. Work two shifts, and we'll throw
in one of our "Simple Solution" t-shirts in our brand-new shades-of-blue
color scheme (yes, there are ladies sizes).
Can you give a few hours to the Expo? Please take a look at our list of needs at www.bikesonoma.org/expovolunteers, and contact Sandra Lupien
(Sandra@BikeSonoma.org or 707-545-0153) to sign up.
Be a part of creating a fine celebration of bicycles!
Only at the Sonoma County Bicycle Expo!
Race with Bike Monkey all day! out of the mouths of the monkeys themselves... " We've been cooking on this one for a
while and, when the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition booked their Bicycle Expo
for the day after our Annadel XC race (or vice versa), we knew the time to act
was now.
We'll be
rolling out this new event smack dab in the middle of the Sonoma County Bicycle
Expo on August 19th, 2012 in downtown Santa Rosa.
We'll have a short track on
closed city streets featuring ramped turns, chicanes, and generally tight
quarters. You'll want a chubby-tired bike here, just to take full advantage and
dig deep in the turns. The best part though, is the race structure itself:
There's no pre-registration;
everyone's a walk-on. You select an ability level and we schedule you out for
repeated heats on the course. The winner of each heat, and a couple of wild
card entries advance through the ranks until, at day's end, it's nothing but
the fast guys and gals, duking it out for the overall win. This kind of
elimination tourney favors gambling like the NCAA basketball tournament pools.
Not that we'd condone such a thing, especially with the full-size leaderboard
we'll have on-site, recording individual wins and ascendancy through the ranks
to the final matchup as they happen.
And as far as racing culture goes
here, we'll be favoring tutus over skinsuits. If your socks have to match your
sidewalls, that's cool, but just expect to catch some heckling for it. Same
goes for the guy in the mermaid suit. There will be a fair gaggle of spectators
and we'll be encouraging them to express themselves. Nothing is sacred, which
is pretty much the only thing that's sacred."
Stay tuned for more info from the Monkeys...
