others.

The Climate Ride is a rare opportunity for Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition to
partner with members of the community like you to raise unrestricted, general
operating funds. Proceeds from the Climate Ride will support, in part, SCBC's
upcoming "Just Ride!" community-based, fun bike rides program. They
also support SCBC's role in the movement to improve conditions for cycling in
Sonoma County (bike lanes, trails, better road surfaces, and more).
Our goal this year is for Team BikeSonoma to be 12 members strong and to raise
at least $30,000. We encourage you to ride with us -- you won't be sorry.
National Bike Summit 2012 Rocked!
image: SCBC's Gary Helfrich & Sandra Lupien with Representative Lynn Woolsey and Andy Peri of Marin county Bicycle Coalition. Gary and Sandra spent last week in Washington DC at the National Bike Summit, hosted by the League of American Bicyclists. SCBC has attended this inspirational convention for many years. This year was especially great and particularly well-timed. With a controversial Federal Transportation Bill moving through Congress, the Summit focused on preparing the 850 bicycle advocates in attendance for bicycle day on Capitol Hill. SCBC met with Representative Lynn Woolsey, Representative Mike Thompson's transportation aid, and Senator Barbara Boxer's transportation aid. We shared stories from Sonoma County that illustrate how critical federal funding is to the success of our local bicycle infrastructure. Our representatives have historically supported dedicated funding for bicycling programs and our meetings in DC verified that they will continue to do so. People from other districts did not always meet with the same level of support. Throughout the Country, elected officials are looking for ways to cut spending and many believe that cutting the relatively tiny fraction of the transportation budget that has historically funding bike/ped is part of the answer. We're here to tell them that even on the small federal investment in bicycling programs has a huge return, and it's critical to keep the funding flowing. In the coming weeks, we'll keep you posted on what's happening in the House. We also enjoyed a number of excellent workshops, so we've returned jazzed and filled with ideas to help make Sonoma County the best place to ride a bike. Gary spent a lot of time in trainings by IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) in order to support SCBC's stepped-up efforts to support mountain bikers and other dirt-lovers. Sandra focused on advocacy-related sessions, and was inspired by the first-ever Women's Cycling Forum at the Summit. The week wrapped up on Friday morning with a beautiful spring-time (sunshine, cherry blossoms, tulips, redbuds) bike ride around the nation's Capitol. Check out the League of American Bicyclists' blog for excellent coverage of the National Bike Summit 2012.
