MAKING THE MOST OF PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

ParentResourcesPage

The school year is in full swing with most schools having completed their first quarter and first report cards coming out soon.  It’s the time of year when parent-teacher conferences are being scheduled and the Federation’s Learning Consultant Professional Learning Team has posted a brief video resource that can help parents prepare to get the most out of this important communication opportunity with their child(ren)’s teacher(s).

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND THE DEANERY?

The 11 parishes and 8 schools of the Northeast Deanery are vibrant and active, with many events that bring parishioners, families and friends together in faith and fellowship.  Here are a few highlighted upcoming events:

St. Angela Merici is holding its 26th Annual Craft Fair on this Saturday, November 3rd 9:00am-3:30pm in the Gymnasium (3860 N. Hwy 67, 63034). SHARING THE GOOD NEWS OF OUR NORTH COUNTY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

The Commission on Marketing and Advancement for the Federation continues to seek innovative ways to promote the availability, affordability and quality of Catholic education available to North County families at our eight elementary schools.  Here are some examples of how we are spreading the good news:

  • The St. Louis American newspaper featured a brief article on the availability of quality, affordable Catholic education in North County in its Private Schools edition in newsstands Oct. 18-24.
  • Throughout December and January you will notice outdoor posters at bus stop shelters along Lindbergh promoting the Catholic Schools Week Open Houses at our schools on January 27, 2013.  Point these signs out to your family and friends and share why you support Catholic schools—either as a parent or a parishioner!

ALIVE in CHRIST! MISSION MOMENTS:

October is Respect Life Month, which each school recognizes in a special way.  For example, Sacred Heart students participate in the Spiritual Adoption Program sponsored by the parish Pro-Life Committee. This program allows the students and teachers to save unborn babies and help mothers make the right choice through intercessory prayer. The students say a brief prayer daily for the rest of the school year to support and strengthen these mothers. Later in the spring they have a baby shower to help support the mothers and babies at Birthright.

FEDERATION SCHOOLS WORK TO PUT THE “FUN” IN “FUNDRAISING”

It's no secret that finances can be a challenge for Catholic schools.  Even with the generous gift that each parish gives for the support of our schools, there is always a need for more funding.  Several of our Federation schools have recently held successful school fundraisers that have the added (or even more important) benefit of bringing the school community together for some FUN!

Some examples of fun and successful fundraising that Federation schools have benefited from include:

  • Tapping into the generosity of local restaurants who will often designate a portion of sales on a particular evening to a school. For example,   St. Angela Merici School had a great time at McTeacher Night (at McDonalds).  According to Mrs. Kaufmann, school principal, this is a great social event of the month.  The school raised over $700 at their September McTeacher night.  The students love to see the teachers.  It is a great place where parents and teachers simply enjoy each other's company.
  • Walk-a-Thons are also popular events that engage the students in a fun activity while raising funds for the school.
  • DSC_1244St. Angela Merici held their 7th Annual Walk-a-thon on Saturday, September 29. Many students earned the right to be on the school's Walk-a-thon Hall of Fame by walking 50 or more laps around the field.  The school met its $7,500 fundraising goal and earned an extra day off school! St. Rose Philippine Duchesne School held it's 2nd Annual Walk-a-Thon for students during ITBS testing week September 17-21.  Students had a chance to get some fresh air and exercise by walking laps on the school field during gym classes and recess periods that week.  Together as a school they walked over 1,400 miles and raised $2,500 for the purpose of renovating the restrooms in the school's main lobby.

Many more creative fundraisers are held regularly at each of the eight Federation elementary schools.  Look for more examples in future newsletters.
