HIGHLIGHTS IN ADVOCACY: T.S.- On the Road to Positive Educational Outcomes

This month, we would like to highlight the work of EDM volunteer Joanne Crooms and her  student “T.S.”

Since 2014, T.S. has been living in a residential treatment facility (RTF.)  With the ongoing guidance and support of Ms. Crooms and his school team, he has developed resilience and is now a “B” student.  T.S. immersed himself in credit recovery classes and for the 2016/17 school year became a senior.  He is scheduled to graduate in June of 2017.  T.S. also engaged himself with the school vocational program and became involved in masonry coursework.  His vocational guidance counselor has high regard for T.S. She anticipates he will receive job offers from local businesses surrounding the RTF.  Counselors, teachers and T.S.’s coach expect T.S. to take the SAT and ACT entrance exams for college.  T.S.’s grades and persistence place him on track to be successful in college. T.S. is on the school track team; plays school basketball; has been captain of the basketball team for two years and never missed a meeting, a practice or a game.  Younger players and students see T.S. as a role model.  He mentors them in sports and school.  For the October Board Meeting of the RTF, the President of the Board of Directors invited T.S. to present what he “thinks about the facility and what he has done at GJR.”

Congratulations to Ms. Crooms, T.S., and the whole school team for all of your achievements!

WELCOME CASA INTERNS!

Welcome three new CASA interns for the 2016-2017 school year! Breanna Miller, Pamela Kelly, and Jillian Shprecher are all in their senior year at Temple, planning to graduate with their BSW in the spring. Each of them come to CASA for different reasons, but are already making a huge impact by helping with the preparation for our annual DHS audit and taking on some difficult cases. In addition to taking on cases, they will be helping with the pre-service trainings, developing in-service trainings, helping to update our database, and probably a lot more, as well as being a young and refreshing presence in the office! If you ever want to reach out to them (to offer support, encouragement or just to say hi!), or have any training ideas to have them look into, feel free to email them at interns@casaphiladelphia.org. We are so excited to have them as a part of the team!

FALL CASA PRE-SERVICE TRAINING BEGINS OCTOBER 17, 2016

If you are an active volunteer who would like to brush up on your CASA skills and knowledge, please join us either as a co-facilitator or member of the training night. Contact Cindy at cindy.blum@casaphiladelphia.org to find out how to get involved.

EDM TRAININGS

impact - Copy

CASA was recently awarded a grant from Impact100 Philadelphia to develop our Educational Decision Maker (EDM) program.  An EDM volunteer is an individual who has been screened and trained by CASA Philadelphia and appointed by the court to serve as the legal “parent” for children in out-of-home care who do not have anyone to make educational decisions on their behalf.

We were pleased to offer our very first stand-alone EDM training on September 8th and we will be offering these trainings quarterly going forward.  The next one is scheduled for January 19, 2017, details TBA.  This means that if you know someone who wants to train just to be an EDM, not a CASA volunteer, they can go to one night of training, complete the required clearances, and be eligible to become and EDM volunteer only.  A background in education is preferred for this stand-alone training.

CASA volunteers who are interested in training to be an EDM volunteer may attend one of our mini-EDM trainings so they may qualify to be an EDM, too.  We will be offering one of these trainings to CASA-trained volunteers only on November 1, 2016, details TBD.

Prospective EDM volunteers who have never trained with CASA must submit their application and complete an interview with staff before being accepted into the EDM training.  (If you have already completed your CASA training, you do not need to resubmit an application or be interviewed again.)  Stay tuned at www.casaphiladelphia.org or contact Cynthia Mason at cynthia.mason@casaphiladelphia for more information.

NOVEMBER 3, 2016- IN-SERVICE TRAINING: DEMYSTIFYING THE IEP

Calling all CASA and EDM volunteers!  Come and join Dr. Lisa Dissinger and Ms. Amy Eisen on November 3, 2016, 6-8 pm in the MLK conference room at the Friends Center (3rd Floor, 1501 Cherry Street) for a discussion of how to advocate for your child’s educational needs based off of their individualized educational plan (IEP).  Dr. Dissinger and Ms. Eisen will focus on how to look at the basic components of an IEP and how they can inform "good" educational decisions and advocacy, whether you are an EDM or CASA volunteer. All attendees are encouraged to bring in questions and concerns about their individual child's IEPs.

Dr. Dissinger is a child psychologist and certified school psychologist who works in many private and public schools in the Philadelphia area. She also volunteers for CASA as an EDM volunteer and will be available this year to provide additional supervision to EDMs with children in residential placement.

Ms. Eisen has been serving students with special needs, their families and teachers for over 35 years. Her professional background includes pediatric occupational therapist, certified school psychologist and, most recently, school administrator. Ms. Eisen also is available to provide additional supervision to EDMs for children with special needs who attend area public schools.

Please RSVP to: Cynthia Mason at cynthia.mason@casaphiladelphia.org if you plan to attend. You will receive 2 in-service training credits for attending this training.

REMINDER: 12 HOURS OF ANNUAL TRAINING HOURS

Thank you again for all of the hard work that you do for the children of CASA Philadelphia.  Your devotion to the mission and dedication to the children we serve allow us to continue to serve abused and neglected children in Philadelphia. Without you, our child clients would not have a voice!

We would like to remind you about our commitment to ensuring that CASA volunteers meet their annual requirement of 12 on-going training hours.  This is a National CASA standard that seeks to ensure that CASA volunteers are supported, educated, and informed about issues related to the children we serve.

Each year we hold quarterly in-service trainings worth 2 hours of training. We offer other monthly trainings on topics such as older youth issues, educational challenges, behavioral and medical health issues. We also regularly offer ideas for at-home reading and movie viewing opportunities.

We are always open to suggestions! If you find a community event, book, or other related activity that might be eligible for in-service training hours, please consult your supervisor or Cindy Blum for more information: cindy.blum@casaphiladelphia.org
