Trees & Shrubsautumn shrubs

Fall is the perfect time to plant shrubs and trees.  Plant evergreens six weeks before the first hard freeze and deciduous plants anytime when the ground is not frozen.  Nourish the new plants with Jonathan Green Lawn, Tree & Shrub Care. Remember to water the new plants and mulch at the base to prevent water from pooling and causing rot.

October 2011
Greetings Lawn Enthusiast,

Fall is officially here and the leaves are changing color.  It is still the perfect time to seed and feed your lawn before the winter.  Follow these fall lawn tips for ideas on how to prepare your lawn and make sure you have the best lawn in town!

Crabgrass still a problem?

Many homeowners say that they are still suffering from crabgrass in their lawns.  This was a particularly wet spring and most of the crabgrass did not germinate until late spring.  Right now it is important to focus on building a strong, healthy lawn.  Do not worry about controlling crabgrass which should die with the first frost.  Next spring wait until late March to apply Crabgrass Preventer plus Green-Up Lawn Fertilizer.  Follow this up with a second application at the end of May or beginning of June.  Doing two applications extends the window of time that crabgrass is likely to germinate.  Crabgrass Preventer plus Green-Up is a pre and post emergent it will eliminate crabgrass up to the three leaf stage.

Overseeding this fall

Are you overseeding your lawn this fall?  This is the perfect time to seed with Black Beauty Ultra grass seed mixture.  It contains turf type tall fescues, perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass which will help strengthen your lawn.  Be sure to appNice house_lawn fall 3ly Mag-I-Cal and New Seeding Lawn Fertilizer when you seed this fall.  The Mag-I-Cal will help balance the soil and the New Seeding Lawn Fertilizer will give the new seedlings the nutrients they need.  You can apply all of these products on the same day.  Remember building a strong, healthy lawn now will lay the foundation of a beautiful lawn next spring.

Winterize your lawn mower

Here are a few tips to lengthen the life of your lawn mower:

1. Disconnect the spark plug before working on the mower.
2. Empty the fuel tank and keep it empty until you are ready to use it next spring.  Run the mower until the tank is empty.  If it has an oil tank empty that too.
3. Clean leftover materials out of the mower and scrub it with a soft brush and hot, soapy water to remove grease.
4. While wearing gloves use steel wool to remove any rust.
5. Remove the blade and have it sharpened.
6. Clean or replace the air filter.
