See you in the San Francisco Bay Area Spring of 2015!

Dear Colleagues, Clients, Students and Friends,

Hello.  I want to take this opportunity to wish you the best of New Years this 2015.
Once again, I’m writing to you from the enchanted shores of Cape Town, South Africa.

ProfilePic 3
I am deeply appreciative for the opportunity to present Degriefing around the world.  I’m especially glad to return to offer more in depth information; building on the educational content of last year’s seminars with St. Luke’s Hospice, Cape Town.  An educational, informative and comprehensive DVD now available from St. Luke’s 2014 Degriefing presentations.

                     ASK me about it!

The seminars this year include a joint sponsorship with the Nechama organization (serving the Jewish population, translated as Hope)

This public event is for allied health care professionals in Cape Town and surrounding areas. This presentation takes place on Monday, February 2nd, 9 AM at the Nelson Mandela Auditorium, 88 Hatfield Street, Gardens, Cape Town. (education@stlukes.co.za)
After Cape Town, I’m traveling up the Garden Route along the Indian Ocean to visit the largest Elephant Reserve in South Africa, Addo Elephant Park. I love and cherish elephants.

I’ll walk with Cheetahs and White Lions before journeying to Kruger National Park to be with as many of the animals on the endangered species list as possible.

The more time I spend in the animal kingdom the deeper I delve into my own bones, the more I feel myself as animal connected to others. We know with our “molecules of emotion we carry the ghosts of the extinct living within our hearts if we turn our backs”. I need contact with these creatures and work toward their preservation.

The grief of extinction is a forever echo.  In February of 2016, I’m inviting you to take a 14-day tour in South Africa with me; a guided spiritual, cultural experience, of music, animal preserves and diverse culture; entitled Degriefing our Lives with Ancient Animal Rhythms (do inquire).

My sense of personal degriefing increases exponentially with the appearance of each new creature.  The presence of such dangerous, strong, huge animals living on the planet by instinct, prowess and camouflage…arouses in me humility and profound vulnerability. For that I am forever grateful.

David Joshua Burk - Loss A Musical Genius

This newsletter is dedicated to David Joshua Burk who lived his life as an American Saddhu, holding space and sharing his wisdom with grace and awareness.
At 19, Joshua played first Violin for the Philadelphia Philharmonic and then entered Hollywood to share his musical brilliance. Josh thrived and stayed in show business until an inner voice directed him to the “road” to seek himself; instead of  “adoration, fortune and fame”.

 Untitled4
At 86, living with Parkinsons disease and using a walker, Josh was still not only playing his violin, he was giving lessons to his room mate at the Veteran’s Home, in Chula Vista, CA, while simultaneously reading Stephen hawking and Lee Child.

Josh played everything full on. While while playing ping pong with his daughter Alissa on Father’s Day, 2013: he let go of the table to win the winning point…and fell breaking his right arm and right hip. That is what literally kick-started his actual  “Exit: stage left”. He is so dearly missed.

Joshua Burk an adored teacher, celebrated musician, beloved truth-telling friend is also my most revered American Saddhu.

Extraordinary artist and our dear friend Tara Danon painted Josh’s portrait, exquisitely exemplifying the essence of the man we often called Baba.  Joshie, thank you for the sweet music.

Transforming the Somatic Aspects of Grief:
Working with Grief In your Professional Practice and Personal Life
6 hour CE Seminar for Health Care & Allied Service Professionals

Novato, California, USA
Saturday, April 18 & May 23, 2015
Lyn Prashant, PhD FT, educator, counselor and author and specialist in somatic grief, is presenting this 6-hour CE workshop in the Bay Area.
Lyn wrote curriculum at UC Berkeley and taught hundreds of individuals the tools to move from being broken-hearted to taking an active role in starting over after loss.

Transforming Grief

Transforming Grief is both the intention and name of the manual written for Degriefing: the therapeutic process that incorporates both verbal and somatic therapies for the transformation of grief.

Degriefing is a body/mind process based in the premise that “grief is the most available, untapped emotional resource for personal transformation.”
This holistic approach, uses traditional and integrative therapeutic modalities to assist individuals in identifying and recognizing the pain of grief in their bodies and minds and teaches how to use grief as fuel: offering charts, lists, forms and glossaries to enable an assessment of an individual’s relationship to their own grief.

Degriefing is intended to normalize the experience of loss and the subsequent upsurges of grief from both past and present events. Grief is the body’s response to loss: any loss. Fresh grief can stimulate the feelings of previous unresolved grief. Loss is a common experience that every person encounters during his or her lifetime.

For professional counselors and caregivers it is necessary to understand the effect that grief has on existing conditions. A grieving person can undergo both significant and subtle changes impacting their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual states.

* Minimum enrollment required 15 days in advance to hold the class.
* Limited to 24 participants.
* One partial scholarship available.
* PCE # 3810 Certificate upon Completion for Psychologists MSW’s, MFT’s, & Interns

San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico

San Miguel de Allende, is perched high in the mountains of central Mexico. The town is a jewel of Spanish Colonial architecture, a place of cobblestone streets and picturesque church domes, frozen in time.

San Miguel is one of the most enchanting cities in the Americas; recently it was named one of the Top Ten Destinations in the World by Conde Nast Traveler magazine–and chosen one of the Five Best Places in the World to Visit by the readers of Travel & Leisure magazine. In 2008, it was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site.

I selected San Miguel as the location for the training because of its remarkable charm and beauty, and because of the feeling of peace, serenity, and sanctuary that permeates the town. Everything here seems wrapped in a mantle of tranquility, giving residents and visitors alike the opportunity for quiet reflection and a sense of pleasure in the simple things of life.

The town, with its colorful walls, massive wooden doors, and breathtaking hillside views, enjoys a moderate year-round climate.

This famous Parrochia is inspired by the great architectural works of Gothic style Medieval Europe.This lovely charismatic structure graces the down town plaza; the San Miguel ‘Jardin’.
