From the President

Hello Everyone,

This is NorCal Solar’s first e-newsletter of the new year, and we have some changes to report. We lost our part-time Office Manager Erin Middleton to another job in the nonprofit world, and we thank her for her 15 months of fun and wonderful service and wish her well. The good news is, our new Office Manager is Emily Barry, and we have hired a Development Director, Karyn Ellis (see Karyn’s bio in our E-News Spotlight, and see Emily's Bio on our Staff Page). I hope you have a chance to meet them soon.

Our other big news is that in 2012, we will be publishing the 9th edition of our popular Solar Energy Resource Guide (SERG), a primer on solar (and energy efficiency). The 8th edition came out in 2008 – how time flies! We are planning a broader range of articles and more thorough distribution of the SERG this time, and we are currently seeking both advertisers and sponsors. Karyn Ellis is our point person – please email or call her at kellis@norcalsolar.org or 415-669-4341 for details, especially since employees do move around and we may not have your most current contact information.

We will be participating again in the Intersolar North America conference and exhibition in San Francisco July 9-12. We plan to offer free admission again into the exhibit hall to NorCal Solar members – watch your email or snail mailbox for the registration code, and please keep your membership up to date (contact Emily in the office to check your status). We gratefully accept your additional donations to support our publishing the SERG 9th edition – soon we’ll have our website set up to specifically accept donations toward the SERG.

Our first networking event of the year will be on March 13, at Spice Monkey Cafe in Oakland. Watch for more networking and other events in 2012, plus our continuing efforts to spur the use of the sun’s energy for making electricity, heating water and space, cooking, drying food, lighting our homes and businesses, and the many other applications of solar.

Yours in clean, renewable energy,
Elaine

Spotlight: Karyn Ellis, NorCal Solar Development Director!

KEllisKaryn has a long history in solar application. She volunteered with the Peace Corps in West Africa where she built solar cookers and taught women how to use them, to alleviate the pain of walking miles to get wood for fire.

After receiving her MS in International Development Technology from Humboldt State, she continued her successful solar career, later becoming the International Programs Director for Solar Cookers International, where she traveled to East Africa and developed programs for schools, churches, and NGOs for solar cooking.

Karyn knows first-hand that solar energy can improve the lives of people from every corner of the earth; she did consulting work in refugee camps in Chad and earthquake-stricken villages in Haiti.

After receiving training from Solar Energy International in the Colorado Mountains, Karyn returned to her original home in the California Bay Area to do more great work with NorCal Solar! Karyn can be reached at kellis@norcalsolar.org.
