![]() Dai Crisp manages Temperance Hill Vineyard, some of the most sought-after grapes in Eola-Amity Hills and the entire Willamette Valley. He started Lumos in 2002 and now, channels his grape-growing talents into a range of his own wines. Julia Cattrall is the winemaker at Lumos Wine Company and was recently featured in the Top 100 winemakers chosen by Wine & Spirits. We're so lucky to have this lady in our Lumos family. |
FOCUSED ON TEMPERANCE: Lumos draws from three vineyards, including Crisp's exceedingly cool, frost-prone home vineyard, Wren, near Philomath. Most of the fruit, though, comes from Temperance Hill, the vineyard he manages in the Eola-Amity Hills. Its elevation, rocky, shallow hilltop soils and exposure to the winds of the Van Duzer Corridor make it one of the most challenging and unique vineyards in the appellation. "The fruit here," says Crisp, "has just a tremendous amount of raw power," partly because of the skin-thickening effect of relentless wind. |

FARMING FOR THE CELLAR: Crisp harnesses that power from five blocks at Temperance, some of the coolest, highest, latest-ripening blocks on the property. As the vineyard's caretaker, Crisp is able to approach harvest with a level of precision that's unparalleled. "I can make last-minute decisions about picking," he says, "and really dial in our acid levels and our sugars." In the cellar, he and winemaker Julia Catrall are gentle with the fruit, relying on ambient yeasts and limiting punchdowns. The 2013 vintage wasn't an easy one in Oregon, but the Lumos pinot noirs are lovely: Temperance Hill and Five Blocks (which includes fruit from Wren) both bring a quiet elegance, defined by the wind-etched fruit of Temperance - mineral and lasting. |
