Appeal of King America Finishing Consent Order Heard in Court

GreenLaw and Stack and Associates represented Ogeechee Riverkeeper on July 9 in Bulloch County Superior Court in an effort to stop pollution from King America Finishing into the Ogeechee River.

At the heart of the argument is the state Environmental Protection Division's failure to hold King America Finishing fully responsible for illegally polluting the Ogeechee River for over 5 years.

The appeal was filed as a result of Administrative Law Judge Lois Oakley's decision which failed to allow Ogeechee Riverkeeper and its members a voice in the government's actions.

The court hearing came after another set of warnings were issued over the Fourth of July holiday weekend by Effingham and Bulloch Counties.  The Emergency Management Agencies of these counties advised people to stay out of the river due to reports of dead fish and discoloration.

Altamaha River Featured on Paddle Georgia

The Benfields Enjoy the Altamaha
Paddle Georgia 2012 was on the Altamaha River. GreenLaw's
Executive Director Stephanie Stuckey Benfield and her family paddled the river and enjoyed a week on Georgia's largest river.

In addition to beautiful scenery and family togetherness, the Benfields saw (and smelled) first hand the pollution leaving the Rayonier pulp mill near Jesup.

Learn more about our efforts working with Atlamaha Riverkeeper to stop pollution from Rayonier into Georgia's largest river system.

Paddle Georgia is organized by Georgia River Network which has entered to win a $50,000 video which will be produced by the film making company, Encyclomedia.

If Georgia River Network wins, they will use it to create a video that inspires folks to get out and enjoy Georgia’s rivers with their family and friends by introducing them to GA’s Water Trails.

To WIN they need your VOTE!  The contest ends July 31st.  Please vote today!

GreenLaw Helps Concerned Residents with Biomass Facility Comments

GreenLaw submitted comments on behalf of Citizens for a Healthy and Safe Environment (CHASE) on a proposed air pollution permit for a biomass facility in Lithonia. The facility proposes to burn wood waste, including left over materials from construction and demolition projects.

The facility will emit a large amount of air pollutants and toxics, including fine particulate matter, which can cause asthma and other health issues. According to the comments submitted by GreenLaw and CHASE, the facility has underestimated the amount of pollution that will be emitted.

The comments also highlight that the proposed facility is in an area already overly burdened by pollution sources, including three landfills, seven air pollution sites, a Superfund site and two toxic release sites within 3 miles of the proposed location. Further, Lithonia’s population is over 85% African American. GreenLaw recently released a report, Patterns of Pollution: A Report on Demographics and Pollution in Metro Atlanta, which found that areas with large minority populations have more than double the number of pollution sources than areas where minorities make up less than 10 percent of the population.

The comments and information from the Patterns of Pollution report are available on GreenLaw’s website at www.greenlaw.org/lithonia-biomass
