THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE LAWYERS' COMMITTEE
School's Out for Summer! While many of LCCHP's Board of Directors, staff, and members will be overseas this summer — studying and preserving cultural heritage in the field — we're still keeping active as an organization. In the upcoming weeks, we'll conclude this year's Student Writing Competition and continue our campaign for open hearings on Senate Bill 2212. We're also busy planning our fourth annual conference, which will take place this fall in Washington, DC. Learn more about these exciting developments below. And stay tuned to future issues of Citations — and follow us on Facebook — for more information.
Student Writing Competition Deadline This Friday The deadline for the 2012 Student Writing Competition is this Friday. Through this event, which we have held for the last five years, we recognize scholarship in cultural heritage law. The first place winner will receive a prize of $1000. The final date for submissions is this Friday, June 8, 2012. For more information, visit the official website.
Campaign for Open Hearings on Senate Bill 2212 LCCHP is asking the Senate to postpone the debate on the United States Foreign Cultural Exchange Jurisdictional Immunity Clarification Act, until it has addressed concerns with the bill through open hearings. The proposed legislation will allow foreign governments to immunize themselves from U.S. lawsuits when loaning art and antiquities to American museums. Although LCCHP supports its purpose of cultural exchange, we fear that it would leave victims of theft and looting without recourse to recover their rightful property.
2012 Annual Conference Announced We are pleased to announce our fourth annual conference — From Plunder to Preservation: The Untold Story of Cultural Heritage, World War II, and the Pacific. This event will mark the 70th anniversaries of the Battles of the Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal.
This two day event will take place November 8-9, 2012 in Washington, DC at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. We hope that it will be the beginning of a long overdue conversation about the fate of cultural heritage during the Pacific War. More information will follow soon.
