THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE LAWYERS' COMMITTEE

Welcome Back from LCCHP!

Dear Friends,

Tess Davis in Cambodia
We extend a warm welcome home to our supporters who spent their summer months studying and preserving cultural heritage in the field. Over the upcoming weeks, you'll be hearing about many of their adventures in future issues of Citations, as well as on our newly launched Facebook page and blog. I myself look forward to telling you about my own work in Cambodia, from where I've just returned. If you have a summer story or photograph you'd like to share with us, please email me at director@culturalheritagelaw.org.

All the best,
Tess Davis, Executive Director

A Busy Summer Behind Us, A Busy Fall Ahead
While many of LCCHP's Board of Directors, staff, and members were overseas this summer, we've still kept very busy as an organization.

Our fifth annual Student Writing Competition in Cultural Heritage Law closed on June 10. This year, we received a record number of entries, with 30 submissions from 26 law schools. The papers are now being judged by a committee of experts, who will announce the competition winners next month.

Professor Edelman
Also in June, LCCHP elected Diane Penneys Edelman to serve as our next President, succeeding Dr. Patty Gerstenblith. Professor Edelman brings with her over two decades of experience and degrees in both Near Eastern Studies and the law. This background, coupled with her passion for preservation, made her a perfect choice to lead our organization forward in the busy months ahead.

In July, following a recent surge in museum heists targeting rhinoceros horn, LCCHP joined with conservation organizations in warning that the illegal trafficking of art and wildlife is a threat to the public and the world's natural and cultural heritage. This campaign received significant positive attention in the media. Our joint statement has now been published over 3,000 times on the web, including by outlets such as PRNewswire, Reuters, Yahoo, and many others.

Now well into August, we're continuing to follow up on our rhino campaign, while launching other new projects that we'll share with you soon. In the meantime, and in between issues of Citations, you can follow our work on Facebook and our blog. And, as always, you can find all this and more at Cultural Heritage Law.org.

Annual Conference in DC

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic. The 1985 discovery of the wreck heralded a new age of nautical exploration — and destruction — as scientists race treasure hunters to the relics on the ocean floor. The law is struggling to keep page, begging the question, what will be the fate of underwater cultural heritage? Find out at our Annual Conference Keeping the Lid on Davy Jones' Locker: The Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage from Titanic to Today. This event will take place on 3 November 2011 in Washington, DC at the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

A preliminary program has now been posted. Registration will open on September 1. Learn more at the official website and on our blog, which in advance of the conference, is exploring important issues in the field of underwater cultural heritage.

If you are flying Delta to attend Keeping the Lid on Davy Jones' Locker, you can earn frequent flyer miles for LCCHP by entering the SkyBonus number US0009266 when making your reservation.
