THP Global Update
AUGUST 2010

Welcoming Our New President & CEO!

Mary Ellen McNish

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Mary Ellen McNish has been appointed President and CEO of The Hunger Project (THP). Mary Ellen joins THP after serving 10 years as General Secretary, the executive head, of the American Friends Service Committee.

She has 35 years of progressive leadership experience in non-profit business settings, including as Executive Director of Development at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and New York Presbyterian Hospital, and Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood of Maryland.

Mary Ellen has a deep connection with THP's mission, vision and principles. Our work resonated with her as unique and important, particularly our core values of fostering self-reliance, empowering women and building partnerships with local governments.

She said, "Changing people's lives from hopelessness to hopefulness, from poverty to abundance, from marginalization to full participation and from supplication to transformation is the bedrock foundation upon which The Hunger Project is built. I am grateful to have the opportunity to be part of this incredible effort."

Mary Ellen will formally begin on September 13. Read more about Mary Ellen.

Dicko

John Coonrod, who has been a key THP staff member for over 25 years and, with his wife Carol, an investor since 1977, has been appointed Executive Vice President. In this role, he will work closely with incoming President and CEO Mary Ellen McNish on a wide range of matters, including strategy, programs, fundraising, communications and advocacy.

Idrissa Dicko, who last month was announced as Head of Africa Programs, has now been formally appointed by the Board as Vice President, Africa Programs.

We know you will join us in congratulating both Dr. Coonrod and Dr. Dicko for this exciting news and their outstanding contributions to THP!

We’ve set up a new THP page on Flickr so you can get a closer look at what THP is all about! We hope you’ll view our first galleries:

As we reported last month, 19 people from five countries traveled on an Investor Leadership Trip to Ghana take a look!

Marie Mintalucci, Senior Program Officer for our Microfinance Program, went to Africa in July – check out her photos from Uganda and Ethiopia!

On Tuesday, August 24, we held the second Young Professionals Committee (YPC) Happy Hour in New York City. The Committee aims to increase awareness about THP and the issues of hunger and poverty, as well as raise funds and promote other actions to help us achieve our mission. Check out photos from the Happy Hour!

Two New Partnerships
UNIFEM_Rajasthan

THP-India has entered into a new agreement with UNIFEM to fund our program in five states. UNIFEM will invest US$700,000 in THP-India for one year to implement this project.

THP-Mexico recently began working in one of the country’s poorest and most geographically isolated municipios (municipalities), called San José Tenango, in the state of Oaxaca, with funding provided by the Federal Government.

Floods in Pakistan

Catastrophic floods have affected millions as waters wash away people's homes, crops and livelihoods. While THP does support disaster preparedness where we work, we are not a disaster response organization, and we do not have programs in Pakistan. To support the victims of the flood, we encourage you to give directly to organizations working to alleviate this situation.

The coalition InterAction, of which we are a member, has put together a list of such organizations. For UK-based organizations, visit the Disasters Emergency Committee website.

Making a Difference

Laura & Chuck Burt

Laura and Chuck Burt from Claremont, CA, are hosting a table at the Fall Event. Laura, a former THP staff member, and Chuck are long-time investors and activists. Having been to both India and Bangladesh, they are excited to celebrate the courage, tenacity and leadership of the women of South Asia as we move forward in partnership to end hunger.

In their own words: "We have always loved having our family and our friends join us in celebrating the successes of The Hunger Project. Many of them have become investors as a result of the evening and come every year to be with us."

You can make a difference too! Attend the event, host a table and invite your friends and colleagues to be there! Learn how!

Quote of the Month

"It will be great to re-connect with so many of our long time Hunger Project colleagues from around the world in celebration of the work of THP and the progress on ending hunger!!!”
