Evanston Rabbi Brant Rosen to Talk about Palestinian Solidarity

Nationally-prominent activist Rabbi Brant Rosen, a congregational rabbi in Evanston, Ill., will read from and discuss his book, Wrestling in the Daylight: A Rabbi's Path to Palestinian Solidarity, on Sunday, February 16, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Logan Square (2649 N. Francisco Ave., Chicago, IL 60647).

Wrestling in the Daylight grew out of posts and comments on Rabbi Rosen's blog, Shalom Rav, which explores the intersection between Judaism and social justice, with a particular emphasis on Israel/Palestine. On the book jacket, Rabbi Michael Lerner states, "The book is the voice of a new generation of American Jews who are refusing to concede that loyalty to the Jewish people requires blind loyalty to the policies of the State of Israel."

In particular, the book grew out of the moment when Rabbi Rosen finally said, "It’s time to take a stand" – December 28, 2008, to be exact – the day he wrote a blog post about the Israeli operation called "Cast Lead," carried out against the Palestinian inhabitants of Gaza.

Queer Clergy Book Launch

On Friday, February 21, 2014, please join us for the official book launch of Obie Holmen's Queer Clergy: A History of Gay and Lesbian Ministry in American Protestantism, at 6 p.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church of Hyde Park (5500 S. Woodlawn Ave., Chicago, IL 60615). "Holmen’s telling of our movement story to the masses will make same-gender loving people aware of a significant part of their own history. Many will be surprised by the breadth and depth of this movement in the Church" writes the Rev. William R. Johnson, who was the first openly gay person ordained to Christian ministry and serves as a pastor in the United Church of Christ. The Rev. Herb Chilstrom, former Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, writes: "I can’t imagine a more comprehensive review of the journey toward inclusion of gay and lesbian persons in the church. This remarkable book will serve as the definitive text on the subject for a long time to come."

Copies of Queer Clergy will be available for purchase at the book launch, and Holmen will also sign books, offer a reading, and answer questions.
