30 seconds with...
30 sec with David Löw Beer Organizer of the World Student Environmental Summit in Lüneburg I have been actively engaged in sustainability in a variety of roles since 2007 when I co-founded the student initiative “Greening the University” in Tübingen, Germany. Recently, as one of the organizers of the 6th World Student Environmental Summit (WSES) in Lüneburg, Germany, I started collaborating with oikos.
The WSES in Lüneburg brought together 70 students from 29 countries and all continents. For one week, we worked on topics related to the Summit’s motto: Universities acting for Sustainability. We dedicated one entire day to the enhancement of student-based sustainability projects of our participants and used the oikos Impact Canvas (a project development tool) during 11 simultaneous workshops. Each of them was led by one speaker from a successful student-driven initiative and a moderator. After the speakers presented their projects, the participants developed their own projects using the impact canvas. In the end, we had a project fair where everyone presented their outcomes with an elevator pitch and received feedback.
The quality and diversity of the initiatives were just amazing. A couple of examples may illustrate that: in Mexico, students are conducting weekly interventions to teach sustainability to elementary school kids. In Egypt, there will be an initiative to create new notebooks with used paper and in South Africa students will be motivated to make their houses more energy efficient. Our participants found the impact canvas to be a great tool to quickly understand a project.
Other than that, I am writing my PhD thesis on Economics Education in the context of Education for Sustainable Development. In my dissertation I try to translate concepts from Environmental and Ecological Economics so that they become teachable in schools. Between my graduation and the beginning of my PhD, I worked in a German comprehensive school for Teach First Deutschland, leading various environmental activities and projects against racism.
To me, sustainability is about getting active both mentally and practically to shape a livable and dignified future.
