Edutopia Summer Academy
Nearly a month ago the Edutopia Summer Academy in Vienna came to an end after 2 weeks of intensive workshops, interesting conversations and heart-warming hugs. It started with a week of learning what a collaboratory is and how to design one and continued with workshops on sustainable consumption, pluralism in economics and other topics. As a result, the participants formed a new prototype for higher management education and are now ready to take further steps.

This month, we set down with Moritz Schwarz, an oikos London alumus to learn about his career in sustainability and oikos experience. “oikos has connected me to a group of young, dynamic people who never get tired to challenge the status quo. 30 Seconds with...
Katrine Tirsgaard Mortensen, oikos Copenhagen
In a world shattered by the climate change, we need to take action. I, therefore, joined oikos Copenhagen a year and a half ago due to my interest in sustainability and, particularly, in the topic of Sustainable Business and Management. In addition, it was very motivating for me to work with dedicated people who share the same sentiments for sustainability.
In Copenhagen, I was lucky enough to become a member of the Develop Prize team, where I together with my teammates coordinated a social entrepreneurship competition. The competition asks students to develop a sustainable idea addressing one of the selected UN Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, in Spring I joined the Governance Working Group of oikos International.
We, oikees, as members of the international network, inspire and educate each other about different views on sustainability. But being a part of oikos, I still believe it is important to actively search for knowledge that is relevant for our international organization and its members “outside” the network as well.
Therefore, when I saw the opportunity to attend a four-week summer course titled “Approaching the Environment in India: Issues and Methods in the Study of the Nature-Economy-Society Interface” in Bangalore, India, I did not hesitate to apply. I was, curious to learn about the main environmental problems in the country and, how those problems manifest in India. I was eager to understand how the country actually deals with those issues. The summer school answered those questions focusing on the economic, social and political aspects of environmental management and sustainable development in India. The multi-disciplinary course introduced me to theories and methods in the study of contemporary environmental issues in India. But more specifically, I learned about environmental challenges and how to approach them, in a developing country like India. This not only supports my future master Programme, Business, and Developing Studies but also my work in oikos.
If oikees gain knowledge through sustainability education opportunities outside Europe, they will not only gain hands-on experience but also a better understanding of environmental problems and solutions that are far from our livelihood. This, can help us shape our work within oikos by sharing that knowledge to educating each other, which enables us to transform economics and management education by empowering students, and raising awareness for sustainability opportunities and challenges.
