Anita Negri
Chief Organiser oikos Spring Meeting 2013 and current President oikos Maastricht
"My life has been enriched by excellent human relations, work and interests" – Rita Levi Montalcini (Nobel Prize Winner in 1986).
When I embarked on the 2013 Spring Meeting project, I did not expect to develop so many new skills or to meet and work with so many interesting people. I believe in learning from experiences and Montalcini, one of my heroes, has expressed exactly how I have been enriched through this project. I have learned that embarking on ventures is not a waste of time and that positivity is a powerful driver at work and in life. Positivity appears to increase intelligence and even efficiency. I, moreover, perceived an overall need in our society to launch creativity and be (pro)active. oikos proved to be an excellent platform to exercise this and turn our ideas into actions. Team work was an essential component of this journey. I learned to trust my team members and value each one of them. I always stressed to my team that opinions must be expressed and sharing ideas is one of the most precious opportunities we have. Thanks to an open minded environment, everyone brought something unique to the table. This resulted in a united team, able to act efficiently and solve obstacles. Therefore, do not be afraid to be unconventional, we are privileged to have a voice, let’s use it!
Various experts and students have made it possible to concretize this Spring Meeting. I hope some sentiment of the importance of responsible and sustainable decision-making stays with the participants. I thank everyone who has collaborated, sponsored, given us advice, participated, been patient, responded promptly and given us challenges.
Lastly, I would like to encourage you to choose constructive challenges and potentially satisfying experiences in your lives. Include the young generation into your initiatives (I included United World College students in the organization of the Spring Meeting) and live with a sense of appreciation towards this world - that is also why sustainability matters.
Next step? I will be guest-speaking at the inauguration of a Master’s course I helped to develop.
