Ilke Schaart, President of oikos Penn
As President of oikos Penn, the first North American chapter of the oikos international network, I am happy to promote the cause in raising awareness in sustainability, management and economics. Having had the opportunity to travel and work in the field of International Development I was able to have unique experiences which formed my personal goals for the future. These experiences were humbling, but they also quite vividly depicted how vulnerable our biodiversity and environment really is. This led me to a career and extra curricular activities focused on sustainability management at the University of Pennsylvania.
I got in touch with oikos through Caroline D’Angelo (editor at studentreporter.org), and my fellow student Aishwarya Nair and I thought that an oikos chapter at Penn would be a great addition to the already booming sustainability initiatives on campus. The Penn campus hosts a myriad of student activities which are focused on local levels, regional levels, and on specific projects. However, none had that international or global stretch that is needed nowadays. Following the Student Reporter experience at the World Water Forum 6 in Marseille, the oikos Penn network began to expand.
In the future, oikos Penn will grow some roots by raising awareness and trying to recruit fellow North American institutions. We aim to establish and continue an oikos Penn Student Reporter team for local or national conferences and strongly encourage the participation of Penn students in oikos projects such as the case-writing competition. We hope to bring to oikos the long stride over to the other side of the world, and we hope they will help us stretch our arms around the globe, such as we recently did at the Rio+20 summit. These are truly great partnerships and collaborations that can help raise awareness on issues that matter.
