February '15
be informed - get involved - make a difference
Dear Reader,
The year is fast spinning out of our hands. So we recommend you to buckle your seatbelt and hold on tight as we stay in pace with the galloping year. An inspiration to all oikos chapters was the newly founded oikos chapter Rotterdam. They organized an event on critical thinking and negotiation skills, a need for students stepping into the corporate world. As we keep talking about being green, oikos members spoke at "The Entretiens du Royaumont" in Paris and we have many more events of our own coming in the next couple of months: the Winter School, the Spring Meeting and so forth! Also, do not forget to sign up for the fundraising webinar with Michèlle Joanisse this month already. January has been a busy month and February promises to be even more so. Read on more.
A New Finance PhD Fellow join oikos
Stefano Ramelli is our new oikos PhD fellow in “Finance & Sustainability” at the University of Zurich’s Department of Banking and Finance. He wrote about his interests and background:
"I've always been interested in financial and economic education as a way to foster an active and broader participation in our society, but also to stimulate practical solutions to make the economic system more sustainable and inclusive. The activities of oikos follow these same principles and values, and I will be extremely happy and proud to contribute to them as a PhD fellow".

Greg Ives, oikos Penn, Alumnus

As an undergraduate at Penn, Class of 2013, I was fortunate enough to be involved with oikos Penn as a member the executive board. I was attracted to oikos not just for its focus on sustainability and management, but because of its incredible international reach. Unfortunately while at Penn I never had the opportunity to travel to Europe in order to experience and fully appreciate oikos’ international presence, a characteristic that defines oikos and makes it so exceptional.
In December, I finally found my opportunity to connect with the oikos International community when I travelled to Paris during the second week of the COP21. For the past couple years I’ve been working on a broad-scale sustainable development project in a remote region of Panama, that historically has seen the demise of its forests in the name of slash-and-burn agriculture. The project is a beautiful challenge with an emphasis on landscape restoration and regeneration. We work to conserve and reforest tropical dry forest, the world’s most endangered major tropical forest type, and protect and restore its various ecosystems, habitats and biodiversity. This means replanting forest, establishing sustainable agriculture systems, eco-tourism and working with various researchers to drive understanding of tropical dry forest ecology and forestry and sustainable land-use. I travelled to Paris to attend a few conferences on landscapes and connect with some of the incredible people working to save what’s left of the world’s ecosystems and biodiversity.
Although I had missed the official oikos Alum Dinner in Paris, a handful of wonderful people where available to welcome me with dinner. A special thanks to Clémentine Robert, Jérôme Lhote, Chloé Laurent, Guillaume Pannier, and Helena Leturcq. I enjoyed learning about their backgrounds and experiences with oikos. After Paris, I continued my travels through France and to Germany, visiting relatives and a few universities. While in Munich, Anna Hoffmann was kind enough for meet up for an afternoon and showed me some of the sites and awesome Christmas markets.
I’m incredibly appreciative of the warm welcoming I received from the oikos community. This experience rejuvenated my connection to oikos and strengthened my pride as an alumnus. I hope to maintain this connection through the future and hope to share my experiences and meet with any alumni or current oikos members, whether it be in Panama or back in New York. Thanks again for all those who I was fortunate enough to meet during my travels and best of luck to everyone in 2016!
