 Oikos Team-3 2

Justyna Urbaniak, Project Head Social Entrepreneurship, oikos St. Gallen

After some subtle convincing by my dear friend and president of oikos St Gallen, Luca, I eventually applied for the position of Project Head for Social Entrepreneurship and joined oikos in September 2017. Anxious at first, I soon realized I was on a great journey, yet little did I know what was awaiting me along the way.

Alongside an amazing team of seven other students, we have developed from scratch the concept of EVOLVE  - a conference on Social Entrepreneurship. Combining all our ambitions and aspirations with a dash of rationality, we decided to reach for the stars.

Throughout seven months of hard work full of ups and downs, we have grown immensely, developing new skills and learning from our mistakes. Finding funds, skyping potential speakers, sending countless emails and putting together goody bags are just some examples of things that made us miss procrastinating from studying.

Finally, we have ended up with a satisfying and exciting concept of 17 keynotes, panel discussions and workshops and of course plenty of sponsored food and drinks! Despite a whole week of worrying, unexpected issues, and sleepless nights, we couldn't have been happier with the outcome of the event. The most rewarding aspect was seeing fascination on peoples faces, people connecting with each other and hearing all the positive feedback from the participants. I believe the most fulfilling aspect was that we got to create something new from scratch and have not taken a concept over from a previous team!

I think I speak for the entire team when I say what we take away from this journey a lifelong memory, pride, six new amazing friends, a compromised immune system and certainly huge respect for people who work in the field of event management!

I hope that we have managed to start a "movement", which can grow, continue to inspire people, spark interest in social entrepreneurship and make a greater impact!

“In a few decades, the relationship between the environment, resources, and conflict may seem almost as obvious as the connection we see today between human rights, democracy, and peace" – remarked Wangari Maathai, Kenyan political activist, and Nobel laureate.

These words and Wangari Maathai herself are the reasons behind my commitment to the environmental cause. That is why I joined oikos Barcelona in April 2017 and why I participated in the "2017 Marine Plastics Innovation Challenge", organized by Think beyond Plastic in collaboration with the UN for the environment.

The purpose of this contest was to find solutions to help solve the global marine litter problem. With my team, composed of two ESADE students: Beccaria Chiara and Ligneau Salomé; we decided to develop "The Marine Litter Fund", based on an econometric analysis. Our equation aimed at assessing the tangible and intangible economic effects of marine plastic in order to identify the financial needs of each geographical area, in two different spheres: Plastic collection and Prevention. This was intended to create a fund introduced in the stock market exchange, financing the needs of each country based on the principle of "blended finance".

The time I have spent at oikos and on the competition helped me understand the impact that each of us could have to ensure a more sustainable future for humankind.
