IMG_5407Tilmann Liebert, Sustainability Consultant at International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and winner of the oikos Sustainability Award 2012

What an honor to receive this year's oikos Sustainability Award for my thesis 'Competitiveness of Renewable Energies in Climate Change Policy: Explaining Post-Kyoto Emission Reduction Commitments'! It was an intense and interesting project which I started in Boston under the University of St. Gallen-Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy dual MA programme, and finished as a fellow at UNEP's Green Economy Initiative. My main finding is that the level of competitiveness of countries’ renewables sectors has an impact on the level of ambition of respective governments’ climate policies. This implies that strengthening cleantech sectors' competitiveness would lead to more ambitious domestic and international climate policies.

I had the pleasure of being active in oikos St. Gallen during my BA studies, helping to realize several exciting oikos Conferences and Model WTOs.

Now I am engaged in projects at IISD, Geneva, focusing on renewable energy policy and advisory services to emerging economies on sustainable investment and industrial parks. For the future, I hope to drive projects implementing sustainable development through innovative partnerships and networks - definitely also with other (ex-)oikies!
