Pranav Gajjar, oikos Ahmedabad alumni on the “theory of doing”
Pranav_GajjarThe ‘theory of doing’ tries to encompass all aspects of present-day as well as future crisis. It identifies the crisis to be a moral one rather than economic or climatic, and its ambition is to involve people to take charge. The intention of this exercise is to initiate intuitive reuse of waste - tangible as well as intangible waste, such as wastage of time, data, human effort etc. Hence, we set up a Hand Papermaking Studio at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, Ahmedabad, India, where I am an architecture student. This studio, which we call ‘Clay Club’, became our backyard laboratory to experiment with our ‘ideas of doing’. One initiative, which is of particular interest to us, is our collaboration with Manav Kalyan Trust, in Navsari (India). The institute is a school for individuals with varied disabilities. We conducted our first hand papermaking workshop with them in April 2012 where we observed that their work was far superior to the regular handmade paper available. The idea is to initiate them into producing handmade paper on a commercial scale to make an honest living, which will create livelihood opportunities for ‘distinctly enabled individuals’. The initiative is successful and is ready to be replicated. The thought is to instill pride and dignity, by making them take charge of their lives in its entirety.
