30 Seconds with...
Adrian von Jagow worked at the oikos headquarters between July and march and supports the 30th anniversary team.
"It’s a funny feeling to see an organization that is so young in terms of its member base to turn 30. For 30 years now, generation after generation of oikees bought a stake in their own education. They all took responsibility for what they were learning, because they knew that this would ultimately shape what they would be doing for the rest of their lives. That - the idea of oikos - is simple and great, which is why it still works after all this time.
But along with a great idea come less mundane matters: recruiting new members; learning to communicate what we do; organizing our increasingly large network around a common idea; and most importantly committing to what we’ve pledged. We did well, which is why oikos still exists, but it’s the kind of perpetual work that never diminishes.
A (relatively) long-time member of oikos Tübingen, I had the pleasure to work full-time with oikos on the international level for the past 9 months. As a new addition to the world’s workforce and new, also, to the complex international oikos landscape, I did as best I could. At this point, I would like to thank the entire international team and everyone in oikos who interacted with me and guided me during this time for giving me so many valuable insights.
During my time, I learned that working together in oikos is essential. I learned this through various ways: First, whenever I tried to rush with a project, without properly consulting every stakeholder, it failed. Second, whenever a project created conflict and it was not openly addressed, it soured. Third, whenever a committed team worked with dedication and mutual interest on a project, it prospered. Working together is more than just due diligence. It does not mean to compromise or to agree, although that is a precondition for success. It’s the state of mind, that everyone who cares about oikos has experienced at least once: oikos, whatever it may be and wherever it may be headed, belongs to all of us.
For the anniversary events in 2017, we will work together a lot. We will have to compromise and reach agreements and we will have to commit to our pledged share of the work. But most of all, we should celebrate that we’re a generation which witnesses the 30th birthday of an inspirational community. Members, alumni, and friends will organize workshops on topics THEY deem relevant to our future. The oikos FutureLab and the oikos St. Gallen Conference organizers will coordinate all their efforts to give everyone who makes the trip to St. Gallen a worthwhile reason. Alumni will encourage other alumni to come, ensuring that all of oikos is represented this fall. I encourage us all to work together for our birthday and for the next 30 years of oikos."
