30 seconds with Rose Karimi
My name is Rose Karimi Kiwanuka of Africa Nazarene University, Business School.
My first encounter with oikos was at the oikos Young Scholars Entrepreneurship Academy 2012 in Zurich while pursuing my PhD at the Rutgers Business School, New Jersey. My interaction with students and faculty from different countries and management fields gave me a different, global perspective on sustainability that I didn’t have before. I was eager to learn more about sustainability and decided to be a change agent who would transform management education and practices in Africa to ensure a more sustainable future. It was during one of the outdoor activities at the academy in the picturesque Swiss Alps, that I mentioned to Jost Hamschmidt of my intention to begin an oikos chapter in Kenya. He introduced me to Lenka Parkanova, the oikos President and the rest is history! We now have oikos, ANU in Nairobi, Kenya and I am one of the advisors.
My vision for oikos, ANU is for it to become something that businesses and individuals in Africa can look up to whenever they think of best practices in sustainability. I would love it if every business, organization and individuals in Africa committed to sustainable practices through the influence of oikos ANU.
This is my dream, and that’s my motivation to become an oikos chapter adviser. I’m working to turn it into a reality. The road map for oikos ANU is ambitious but not impossible. If you’ve ever been frustrated by an entire continent not even for a moment thinking about sustainable practices in any of their actions, you’ll understand what oikos ANU is trying to accomplish here. I think too often students are written off, so this is a good opportunity for Africa Nazarene University oikos students to show that they are perfectly capable of taking their studies and experiences at university and applying them to real life. I commit to help the chapter achieve the goals it has set.
Sustainability is the foundation of our future and we need to know how to make it better. That is why I will not rest until we have a critical mass of oikos chapters in Africa to transform our continent.
