Art I Session I
A delightful small group of homeschool students participated in our first session of the Studio Art Classes for homeschoolers this January and February. Students created various art projects in our gallery and classroom spaces and took a field trip to the Kraussdale Meetinghouse. From drawings they made in our gallery spaces they translated 2D designs inspired from Pa German motifs into individual clay reliefs. Students also made small watercolor paintings based on their experience at the Kraussdale Meetinghouse. To see more examples of their excellent artwork, please visit our website.
Art II Session I
Art II, Session I, consisted of one very bright young adult who was exposed to different types of observational drawing and painting techniques while working with the SLHC's collection on exhibit. His drawing portfolio, created during the course, consisted of exercises that focused on rendering and developing form using continuous and contour lines as well as denoting value. He also completed short sketchbook and reading assignments that coincided with his activities in our gallery. The second half of the course he explored the use of acrylic and watercolor in small works. From his drawing created on the trip to the Kraussdale Meetinghouse, he created a large 24"x36" watercolor painting—the largest painting he's ever created.

Students in our foreign language classes this month were given a unique opportunity to view rarely seen texts from our archive. With our Associate Director of Research, Allen Viehmeyer, students looked at our Latin edition of the Bible, printed in 1485 by Anton Koberger and a printed copy of a letter written in Latin by Silesian reformer Caspar Schwenckfeld in 1527. Latin and German language lessons for homeschoolers run on a monthly basis, 8 sessions in total. $50.00 per participant per month. Students have the option of attending class 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Wednesdays and 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Fridays, completing a total of three hours of instruction per week. Lessons are taught by Allen Viehmeyer, SLHC Associate Director of Research. For registration information and course description, see our German and Latin Course webpage.
