TRUCKING EFFICIENCY NEWS “Fleets can enjoy approximately 2.5% reductions in fuel use, and a payback on investment in about 20 months, by adopting currently available 6x2 axle technologies.”Mike Roeth, NACFE's Executive Director and Trucking Efficiency Operation Lead
Trucking Efficiency has found that North American tractor-trailer fleets can accrue multiple benefits from adopting 6x2 axle systems, and moving away from the much more widely used tandem 6x4s. 6x2 axles offer a number of benefits: they lower fuel consumption, vehicle weight, and maintenance expenses and, in some cases, improve stability. Adverse consequences include less traction due to only one drive axle and increased tire wear. The short-term concerns—higher upfront purchase cost and lower resale value—are expected to be mitigated over the next few years as buyers become more confident and scale is increased by higher demand. This will be especially true since 6x2 production is expected to double each year for the next three years.
These findings are captured in Trucking Efficiency’s second Confidence Report analyzing single-drive 6x2 axles. The report shows a clear business case for fleets to transition to 6x2s. And, as fleets prepare for this shift, they can benefit from the report’s substantial feedback from other fleets, including the implementation best practices of early adopters. However, each fleet should confirm these findings with their own business case calculations using their specific duty cycle and business model. Mike Roeth, NACFE’s Executive Director and Carbon War Room’s Trucking Efficiency Operation Lead shared that, “Thanks to an extensive series of interviews, and permission from the industry to publish their pre-existing test results, this confidence report marks the first and only place where the actual data of various fleets’ experiences with 6x2s is shared publicly. And they are now shared side-by-side in one place, making the findings of this report not only more compelling but also more likely to be relevant to a range of fleets and truck owners”. Analyzing 10 distinct sets of data provided by the industry and custom tests conducted specifically for this report, the study group identified a 2.5% improvement in fuel efficiency from 6x2s. John Fehring, the study’s program manager, says, “This report is very comprehensive in analyzing not only the benefits but also the consequences of adoption. For instance, we tested the traction of the two configurations and learned that adding electronics for load shifting can significantly improve the inherent issue of 6x2 traction.”This effort was sponsored by Dana Holdings Corporation and Meritor, Inc., the two providers of such axles, with in-kind contributions from Bridgestone Corporation, Michelin North America, Inc. and Performance Innovation Transport.Watch a video overview of the report and the testing conducted https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3hdf53TuSicAccess the payback calculatorwww.nacfe.org/projectsAccess the Tire Pressure Report.http://nacfe.org/projects/
TRUCKING EFFICIENCY Trucking Efficiency is a joint effort between North American Council for Freight Efficiency and the Carbon War Room to double the efficiency of North American goods movement by 2016 through the elimination of market barriers to information, demand and supply. The Operation is gathering and centralizing the many existing sources of data about the performance results of different technology options and working with the industry to share previously unpublished data, when employed in a variety of vehicle models and duty cycles, and making all of that data openly accessible and more cross-comparable.In order to generate confidence on the performance claims of efficiency technologies, Trucking Efficiency is conducting a series of studies, known as Confidence Reports. The first Confidence Report focused on the available technologies for ensuring appropriate tire pressure and was published in August 2013. We will be publishing additional reports on anti-idling devices, automated transmissions and driver coaching aids.
NORTH AMERICAN COUNCIL FOR FREIGHT EFFICIENCY The North American Council for Freight Efficiency will drive the development and adoption of efficiency-enhancing, environmentally-beneficial, and cost- effective technologies, services, and methodologies in the North American freight industry by establishing and communicating credible and performance-based benefits. The Council is an effort of fleets, manufacturers, vehicle builders and other government and non-government organizations coming together to improve North American goods movement. For more information go to:www.nacfe.org
CARBON WAR ROOM The Carbon War Room is a global nonprofit, founded by Sir Richard Branson and a team of like-minded entrepreneurs, that accelerates the adoption of business solutions that reduce carbon emissions at gigaton scale and advance the low-carbon economy.
