 | | Dear Friends, Hello again from Philadelphia where so much is happening! Right off the bat, if you haven't heard of Philagrafika, here is a very strong suggestion: Make an appointment in your 2010 calendar to see the international Philagrafika Festival celebrating print in contemporary art, January 29 thru April 11, 2010, with more than 300 artists at 80+ venues throughout Greater Philadelphia. These are not print shows, but wonderful shows of contemporary artists whose work is print-related in some way. The festival is as open as contemporary art itself. I have been working with the Philagrafika team for several years and cannot wait myself to see all that will be happening here during the next 3 months.
As part of Philagrafika, I'll have a solo show, "Bearing Witness," at the List Gallery at Swarthmore College opening March 4. I'm also participating in group exhibitions at PAFA, The Free Library, and the McCabe Library at Swarthmore as well as a First Person Arts Salon and a panel at the Southern Graphics Council Conference. (Whew!)
If you're not in the area and are thinking about coming, Philagrafika is THE time to do it! www.Philagrafika.org

"Bearing Witness" at List Gallery, Swarthmore College, March 4 - April 9 Prints and paintings from my interviews with Iraqi victims of torture will be featured, including a new, large-scale print based work. Preparing this has been a massive undertaking, and in the spirit of Philagrafika this new project takes printmaking beyond its usual confines. I designed and built a 14'x10' printed plywood wall that may change your idea of what a print can be. (My first prototype for this project was shown at the Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown and was reviewed by the Boston Globe. Another version of this wall is on view in the Ettinger Studio show-- see below.)
Heyman Lecture: March 4, 4:30pm, reception 5:30 - 7pm at Lang Performing Arts Center Cinema
This exhibition is sponsored by the William J. Cooper Foundation and Swarthmore College. A catalog for the show, my first in more than 3 years, is funded in part by sales of a new print. (Please see the last story for details.) _____________________________________________ Concurrent with "Bearing Witness" at McCabe Library, Swarthmore College "Printmakers Go to War: Works by Daniel Heyman in collaboration with Nick Flynn, Damian Cote, Eric Avery, and Michael Reed" I was pleased to have the opportunity to curate a show that leverages both the documentary and diaristic aspects of printmaking and bookmaking. The artists featured critique institutionalized violence and reassert imaginative space for compassionate endeavors.
Along with the exhibition is a public symposium on Saturday, March 20, "Artists in Wartime: Bearing Witness/Shaping a Response" Participants Janine Mileaf, moderator, Asst Professor of Art History, Swarthmore Damian Cote, Artist and former Marine stationed at Guantanamo Bay Juan Manuel Echavarria, Artist Daniel Heyman, Artist, Visiting Assoc. Professor of Studio Art at Swarthmore, RISD, and Princeton University Laurel Reuter, Director, North Dakota Museum of Art
Symposium: March 20, 9:30am - 12pm, Lang Performing Arts Center Cinema Reception: 12-1pm, McCabe lobby; Reading by Nick Flynn at 1pm

"Selections from C R Ettinger Studio," PA Academy of Fine Arts, Jan 29 - April 18 I'm excited to be part of a show with someone I've long admired and collaborated with, Cindi Ettinger. (That's me printing with Cindi in the photos at the top of this newsletter.)
The C.R. Ettinger Studio specializes in etchings, and included will be 50+ works demonstrating the versatility of the etching medium today. I have four prints hanging in this show, plus a 7' etching on wood sculpture -- a preview of what will be on view at Swarthmore's List Gallery from March 4 - April 9.
I'll also be giving a free, public talk, "Bearing Witness to War When all the Photographers are Blinded," about my work with Iraqi civilians victimized by war, highlighting my most recent and metaphorical series of etchings printed on wood constructions that concern the impossibility of bearing witness when the hard facts of a war are kept out of public view.
Artist Talk: February 24, 12-1pm, Hamilton Auditorium

"Close Encounters: Acts of Social Imagination," Denison Museum, Jan 22 - Mar 22 Centered on the theme of social imagination, "Close Encounters" juxtaposes documentation of temporary public art projects and visual artworks addressing the same themes. Taking as a starting point the multiplicity of artistic engagement, it investigates in which way different artists function in diverging ways within the social realm. The exhibition originates from the specific meaning created by the diversity of media used, and investigates their confrontation, nearness and variety, their close encounter.
Other artists whose work is featured are Allora & Calzadilla, Mel Chin, Ester Partegas, Jeremy Deller, Trevor Paglen, Jenny Holzer, Annabel Daou, Ligorano/Reese, Floating Lab Collective, Cory Arcangel, and Jefferson Pinder.

"Bearing Witness" Travels to Wesleyan University April 24 - May 23 I'm thrilled that after Philagrafika, "Bearing Witness" will next be on view at the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery at Wesleyan University. Working with the encouragement of curator Nina Felshin, I have planned an even larger etching on wood installation for the Zilkha north gallery. And, works from the Amman Portfolio of the Abu Ghraib Detainee Interview Project will be on display.

Limited Edition Print, or How to Help Fund My Catalog In conjunction with the upcoming "Bearing Witness" exhibitions, I am producing a catalog of works from the Swarthmore show as well as other pieces important to me. For this effort I have commissioned several writers with unique vantage points to write about the Abu Ghraib torture victims with whom I have worked over the past several years. To help fund this extensive project, I created this etching and relief print, "Troubling Eagle," available in limited edition for $750 (17.75" x 22.25", unframed). Please contact me for details.
