AAWAA Awarded California Arts Council Creating Public Value Grant

California_Arts_Council-logo-B7D26CE109-seeklogo.comAAWAA is an arts organization known mostly for its visual arts achievements, but our artists represent all different media forms. Thanks to the California Arts Council's Creating Public Value grant, we will spotlight the craft literary and performance artists by presenting a series of events hosted by guest curators. These events will be filmed and made available online as part of our Archives Project, a portal to Asian American Women in the arts. With this grant, we will capture new audiences beyond the usual visual arts supporters by reaching out to literary and performing artists and enthusiasts. Stay tuned!

Art, Cooking and AAWAA: A Recap of the ACCT Picnic

acctpicnic 2Invited by Flo Oy Wong, the Association of Chinese Cooking Teachers Picnic at Aroma Restaurant in Alameda was a great success for AAWAA. Writer Kelsay Myers spoke about her experiences with AAWAA and A PLACE OF HER OWN; artist Elaine Gin Louie talked about how art can be a creative tool for self-expression as well as her own process creating her large-scale installation, “Visible,” for A PLACE; and writer Roshni Rustomji read her dedication to Mirrha/Catarina de San Juan, a Spanish slave from India, along with her essay, “The Gift of Chocolate,” from the anthology, Cheers to Muses.

One person called the presentations “entertaining,” another person “great,” and quite a few expressed an interest in AAWAA’s future events. A lot of laughs, good food, inspiring art and political conversation could be heard around the table.

Happy 50th Anniversary Flo & Ed!

We are so grateful to come from a legacy of masterful Asian American women in the arts like Flo, one of the founding members of AAWAA, and we continue to be inspired by her generosity and spirit.
