PNAA April Breakfast Meeting:
Local Experts Briefed Aerospace Executives on Cyber Threats and New Regulations

Experts from PNAA Member companies Parker, Smith and Feek, Moss Adams and Pacific Northwest Law Group convened in front of an intimate group of local suppliers to explain how to be prepared for the newest cyber risks and regulations.  Attendees first learned about the far-reaching effects of the European Union’s new GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) and the potentially devastating impact that non-compliance could have on unsuspecting Northwest aerospace manufacturers.  They also received practical tips on how to ensure their companies have well-coordinated cyber incident response plans in place, in order to both contain the damage and minimize the consequences of regulatory non-compliance after potential breaches.
Speaker and attendees (2) PNAA April Lunch Forum:
Aerospace Companies Participate in Interactive IP Workshop

On April 4th members of PNAA and the local aerospace community joined us at BAE Systems’ Seattle Center for Collaboration for an interactive workshop on Intellectual Property.  PNAA member J.D. Houvener of Bold IP PLLC led the team through the differences between Patents, Trademarks, Copyright and Trade Secrets, their application process and conditions for enforcement.  The group worked on multiple case studies to practice their newly acquired knowledge and ensure that they can both protect and monetize their ‘secret sauce’ of their businesses.
IMG_0533 Executive Roundtable on Tariffs:
Aerospace Executives Discuss the Global Impacts of Tariffs on the Industry

On April 26th PNAA arranged for 27 Executives to gather and learn about the latest updates on tariffs and trade.  Dorsey and Whitney LLC hosted the event at their spectacular offices in the Columbia Tower, Seattle, kicking off the event with Nelson Dong's aptly titled ‘Tariffs, Tension and Trade,’ providing a comprehensive overview of the landscape, global reactions and what’s to come.  Kelvin Stroud of Aerospace Industries Alliance then joined us from DC by live video to provide an overview of the work that they are doing to influence the international impact.  Following this Robin Twyman, Seattle Consul for the UK Government Office and Michael Wooff, Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner for the Canadian Consulate in Seattle, provided an overview of the perspectives and potential impacts for the UK, the EU and Canada.  The audience then engaged in a lively Q&A before convening for a networking social.

ID Integration Shares White Paper on Barcode Security Threats

ID Integration became aware of a potential cyber security threat of malicious barcodes which was also reported on by a Chinese research lab.  A USB connected barcode scanner is seen as a second keyboard by a computer.  A 2D barcode can easily contain over 50 alphanumeric characters (keyboard presses).  Would you invite a cyber criminal to use your keyboard?  Of course not!  Now imagine scanning a barcode created by a cyber criminal with embedded Windows system control commands that can disable your firewall, delete files, auto-email, or even ping a system to provide hackers your IP address.
To help support its customers, ID Integration developed a barcode scanning Firewall in its Barcode OS scanners to identify and disable any malicious barcodes scanned.  The company has been told by multiple people that malicious barcodes are currently being used as an attack vector in companies' receiving, shipping, inventory and manufacturing operations.  ID Integration created an educational white paper on its website that you can access for more information.
