Established in 1986 to preserve and promote the French salt marsh heritage, Esprit du Sel is located on the historic island of Ré where salt has been hand-harvested from the sea since the 7th century. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, the island benefits from an exceptionally sunny climate (the number of sunny days is equivalent to the Mediterranean coasts). The French National Center of Culinary Art (CNCAC) has awarded the salt marshes of the Island of Ré with the French designation "Remarkable Site of Taste".
Hand-harvested ("raked and gathered") during the summer season, Esprit du Sel grey salt contains 1-3% clay, which gives the crystals a warm pewter color and earthy flavor. This natural salt is not treated or washed and thus it retains the beneficial trace elements such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, and iodine. Sel Gris is an everyday table salt at French bistros and in modern kitchens. Use this textured, briny salt for all your cooking needs. It is great as a base for rubs as its coarse, large grains work their way into the meat and thus add remarkable flavor.
