Humans like measurement. Need evidence? Who still has those pencil marks graffitied on a doorway of your childhood home? When you’re young, every inch counts and calls for celebration.
Whether it’s physical growth or character growth, it’s always nice to see hard evidence that we are indeed making progress.
“Measurable” seems to be the word of the month. Companies and people are becoming less and less patient with ideas, goals, concepts, efforts that go nowhere because they lack a means of measurement or definition.
Every corporate value, employee expectation and performance evaluation that is left undefined leaves room for wasted time, energy and money.
If you expect Jacqueline to improve her communication skills, then you’d better give her three measurable objectives for doing so.
If you recently told your management team it’s not living up to the company’s corporate value of “excellence,” ask yourself if you’ve clearly laid out how the company measures “excellence.”
This month we’ve pulled a few different reads we hope will get your wheels turning on this topic. We leave you with this quote:
"The process of leadership is one of painting a vision, then saying how you're going to get there, and then measuring whether you're actually getting there. Otherwise, you risk only talking about great things but not accomplishing them." - Mitt Romney, businessman and politician
