Global Footprint Network: Advancing the Science of Sustainability
Dear Friend of Global Footprint Network,

When I was born in 1962, humanity lived within the means of nature. Sadly, this is no longer the case.

Today, humanity uses the equivalent of 1.5 planets to provide the resources we use and to absorb our emissions. But of course, we only have one planet, and this continued ecological overshoot can only go on for so long.

Why should any of us care? Because the majority of countries and states operate their economies without tracking the ecological resources they use against what they actually have.

It is like flying a plane without a fuel gauge, and it affects everything from what you pay at the grocery store to the type of world you and your children will live in.

Global Footprint Network is changing this troubling situation. We collaborate with countries and states to see the vast opportunities available when they balance their ecological budgets.

Today, I'm delighted to share with you that Dr. William Rees and I will receive one of the world's most prestigious environmental awards: the Blue Planet Prize for our work in creating the Ecological Footprint.

The Blue Planet Prize is a tremendous acknowledgement of our work. It also includes a cash gift of $300,000 — which I will donate in its entirety to Global Footprint Network.

The Global Footprint Network Board of Directors and I would like to invite you to match this $300,000 gift. Will you invest in our work today with your own gift of $50, $100, $250, or whatever you are able to contribute?

Your generous financial support will help us to enhance our work in for the remainder of the year, enabling us to:
  • Bring our work to even more communities, states, countries, financial institutions, central banks, and ministries.
  • Increase international media outreach to broaden our message.
  • Launch the 2012 edition of our comprehensive National Footprint Accounts, which tracks Ecological Footprint and biocapacity trends for 220 countries.
With your financial support, we can shift the way states and nations invest and plan for their future. Preparing for a resource-constrained world is, after all, in the self-interest of every country and all people.

Please give as generously as you can and be part of the Blue Planet Prize. Thank you in advance for your support!

Warmest regards,

Mathis Wackernagel
