Health Tip - Mushrooms for Immunity

Last month Sustain published an article on the role that Cordyceps, a type of fungus, can play in fighting breast cancer. Did you know that virtually all edible mushrooms, even the lowly white button mushroom, can help strengthen the im
mune system? In a recent Arizona State University study, mice were fed a diet that included 2% common edible mushrooms. After 4 weeks, none of these mice showed any toxicity nor remarkable changes in their immune cells. However, when they were fed colon-cancer inducing agents, none of them developed the inflammation, cancer or weight loss typically seen in mice with similar exposure.

In Asia, mushrooms have long been used to ward off disease and promote vitality. Though many varieties have medicinal benefits, three species--Ganoderma lucidum (lingzhi or reishi), Lentinula edodes (shiitake), and Grifola fondosa (maitake) have received particular attention for their antimicrobial and anti-tumor activities. Research has also demonstrated that these species help to lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar and assist liver recovery against damaging agents such as alcohol.

In human terms, the Arizona State research dose would equal about 2.5 cups of raw mushrooms, so saute up a serving and enjoy! Can’t stand mushrooms? Sustain features Three Imperial Mushrooms by Sun-Ten Herbs, a concentrated extract of these the three immunity powerhouses mentioned above plus American ginseng, an effective adaptogen. Just two capsules a day is needed for health maintenance (higher doses prescribed for disease conditions). for more information

Monthly Special - Get a Gua Sha or Cupping session in February and receive a complimentary bag of therapeutic bath salts!

In gua sha, the practitioner uses a flat tool to apply gentle friction to the skin of problem areas. This friction massage stimulates circulation to stagnant areas, encourages detoxification, and promotes a healthy immune response. In cupping, warmed glass cups are used to apply vacuum suction to the skin. It is often compared to a “reverse” deep tissue massage and very strongly promotes blood circulation and detoxification of the tissues, and energizes the lymphatic system. Your TCM practitioner can help you determine which modality is suitable for your condition. Both of these therapies are extremely helpful for chronic muscular tension, beginning stages of a cold, and a wide variety of disorders related to poor circulation.

Our bath salts use a combination of therapeutic minerals, herbal extracts and essential oils to soothe muscular aches and detoxify the skin during inflammatory conditions. Soak away your complaints and relax!
