Sister Alliance Wins Big on Local Food

The Greater Edmonton Alliance (GEA), MACG's Sister Alliance in the IAF NorthWest, just completed
a super successful multi year Local Food Economy campaign all about conserving land use for local food production.

GEA turned out 500+ people to Edmonton City Hall on three separate occassions in the last 18 months.  All of their asks were included in the final version of the approved City plan.  Here are some videos and news articles related to their campaign:

June 1 Start of First Survivor House.  You can help furnish it!
Stan Aschenbrenner and Cecil Denney, Lake Oswergo UMC

Clackamas Cluster Leaders have set June 1 as the date to open the first Survivor House (for victims of Domestic Violence)  that will use Oxford Houses as a model.

The house will be created so that six women will have a safe place to live and recover from a domestic violence situation. The house will enable eligible women to make the transition from Clackamas Womens Services to self-sufficiency.

After applying for and receiving a grant in December sufficient to fund the opening of such a house, leaders in Clackamas have been hard at work preparing for the opening.

Preparations Clackamas Leaders are taking include: (Click to read more!  You could even help furnish the house!)

Healthy Kids Sign Up Events Result in Insured Children

The Health Care Action Team has helped 7 MACG institutions hold 10 Healthy Kids Sign up events, with the goal of spreading the word about newly available Statewide Health Insurance programs for children, and actually enrolling children in these insurance programs.

See the two stories below for on the ground reports of one of the most succesful events

At the forefront of this effort have been 5 MACG Certified Application Assisters, with 3 more trained at the end of March.  These Application Assisters have sent 15 applications, covering 20 children!

More events are in the works...continue reading this article on the MACG website to find out about more sign up events and how you can help organize one!

Signing up Healthy Kids at PCC
By Karen Meurer, PHOENIX RISING Transitions

PHOENIX RISING Transitions Core Team members organized two sign-up events for the Healthy Kids program at Portland Community College. The first one took place on February 15th and several people signed up. Others asked for more information and wanted to know when we were coming back. MACG and PHOENIX volunteers were so pleased with the event that they decided to hold another one on March 1st.

A Child Gets Insured
By Jean Eilers, SEIU 49 and MACG Application Assister

As a certified MACG Application Assister, I helped an Asian-American citizen apply for benefits for his wife and child.  He marked the form for both, indicating that for his wife he was applying separately.  He holds two jobs and wrote in his income: roughly $3526 per month.  He had a copy of his daughter’s birth certificate and proof of income from the two jobs.  He came to PCC the day MACG and PHOENIX RISING Transitions had set up a table.

SustainableWorks Prepares to Apply For 100 Homes

The SustainableWorks Action Team has been readying itself to apply for the neighborhood based Request for Proposals (RFP) from Portland's Clean Energy Works Pilot project, due out April 23.  If SustainableWorks wins this RFP, it would have enough funding to retrofit for energy efficiency up to 100 homes.

Retrofitting homes will reduce carbon emissions from energy use, create jobs for workers performing the retrofits, and save energy costs for the home owners, MACG's "triple bottom line".  Read more here.

Multnomah Cluster Meeting Brings 13 Institutions Together to Discuss Action

Redeemer Lutheran Church hosted the now quarterly Multnomah County Cluster meeting on March 18.  Representatives from 13 out of 16 Multnomah County institutions were present.

Rev. Melissa Reed set the tone for the meeting with a personal "power with" reflection, inspiring us all to continue our relational meetings. Click here to read the article.
