SAVE A LIFE: SPAY OR NEUTER
|
February 2010
|
| Hello WAG supporter,
As February draws to an end, so does our participation in the national Spay Day USA program. While the events may be over, the need for spaying and neutering remains constant. Millions of animals are killed each year simply for being born into a world without enough caring homes for them all. Until everyone takes the pledge that Bob Barker turned into a popular saying, the problem will never cease to exist.
We are extremely grateful to our supporters who took part in our online Spay Day USA photo contest by uploading pictures of their animals. We had 24 animals participate in the contest, which drew worldwide media attention to the need for spaying and neutering.
We also want to thank Dix Animal Hospital and Wyandotte Animal Hospital for partnering with us to provide low-cost spaying and neutering during the last week of February.
We will have numbers to report next month on the local animals who were spayed and neutered as a part of the program, as well as how much money was raised to continue being able to provide low-cost spaying and neutering.
In the meantime, please enjoy the heart-warming stories in this newsletter as well as find ways you can get involved. Thanks, as always, for your kind support.

BY THE NUMBERS ...
So far this year, WAG has found new homes for:
22 cats and kittens
16 dogs and puppies
|
JAMAICA
Jamaica came into WAG's foster program as a kitten with a lot of health problems. Fortunately, the Siamese kitty was determined to be adoptable and was soon taken to an off-site adoption event. It was there where she caught the eye of Nancy Wilcox, who quickly adopted her and brought her into a household of other four-legged friends. She has since been renamed Mocha.
This is the letter we recently received:
"Just a note to let you know Mocha is Wonderful!!! Now at a healthy weight, no seizures. She has been spayed and is doing great... Thanks for your support during those Scary beginnings... Here are a few pictures of her ... Thanks again we love her!!!!!"
LOOKING TO ADOPT AN ANIMAL?
If you're looking at adding a dog or a cat to your family, please remember to check out our adoptable animals every Saturday at the Livonia PetSmart, 13150 Middlebelt Road, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
While only a few animals are at our off-site events, ALL of our adoptable animals can be found online 24/7. If you have questions about an animal up for adoption, please email our adoption coordinators or leave a message at 1-734-782-5768.
PUPPIES X 11
Our adoption area was quite busy this weekend at PetSmart as a pack of puppies drew everyone's attention. Eleven black Labrador Retriever puppies were born Dec. 28 and are looking for new homes. WAG brought the puppies' mother, Candy, into our foster program after being found as a stray. We then realized she was pregnant and began preparing our foster homes for a sudden influx of energy. The puppies made their premiere this weekend at PetSmart and were a true hit. Four of them have already been adopted, with at least one more on her way to finding a new home.
You can view more pictures of the available puppies, watch a video clip of them frolicking around outside in the snow and fill out an adoption application by clicking here.
OUR SINCERE THANKS
WAG is always extremely grateful for the vast amount of support that we receive from the community. We wanted to highlight just a couple of recent examples.
The staff at Delta Cargo Services in Romulus held a collection drive for WAG near the holidays. They logged onto our Web site, found our wish list and started the project. We had no idea the number of items collected until we met company officials to pick up their donations. We were overwhelmed by the food, litter and other essentials that they were able to gather. The animals in our care are surely appreciative as donations such as theirs means more of our money can go towards veterinary care. Thank you Delta Cargo!
A husband and wife, who wish to remain anonymous, wanted to sponsor WAG for Christmas. They, too, looked at our wish list and went out shopping. When the man delivered the items to one of our volunteers, he said they were getting ready to move out of state and wanted to do something before they left because they appreciate the work that we do. Talk about a surprise when he opened the bed of his truck to reveal a packed pallet full of high-quality dog and cat food, which many of our animals need, especially over the winter months.
These are just two of the many examples of the kindness shown to us recently. We're currently working with a school who hopes to do a collection drive for WAG. We'll let you know it that pans out. And if you have any ideas you'd like to share with us, please get in touch. We are happy to work with any business, group or individual wanting to hold an event for WAG. We can provide you with materials, and if needed, a guest speaker to talk about the work we do.
LOOKING TO VOLUNTEER?
WAG is always looking for volunteers. They are the lifeline of our organization, which has NO paid employees. We can use volunteers who are able to give 20 hours a week or two hours a week. We can use volunteers willing to foster animals or those willing to make phone calls. There are countless volunteering opportunities available. Please email us to find out how your talents can best be used to help the animals in our care.
WAG GARAGE SALE
Our resident yard sale pro, Eula Grooms, is switching up her big sale this year to have it earlier in the spring. Normally held in conjunction with the Wyandotte Street Art Fair, Eula is hosting this year's yard sale in conjunction with Wyandotte's citywide sale on May 15-16. This single event has turned into WAG's largest money-maker. Without pricing a thing, WAG earns several thousand dollars each year through Eula's efforts. Everything sold is on a name-your-own-price level and some people are quite generous when shopping, knowing that 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to caring for the animals in our program.
Eula accepts donations year-round. To schedule a drop-off time, please call her at 734-282-2947. Or, if you have a lot of items, consider hosting your own yard sale to benefit WAG. We'd be happy to provide you with brochures and newsletters to pass out to your customers, as well as advertise your sale to all of our supporters. Please get in touch if you'd like to help.
COMEDY SHOW
WAG is hosting its second annual comedy fund-raiser at 8 p.m. April 23 at The Comedy Room at Portofino, 3455 Biddle, Wyandotte. Tickets are $20 a person and include a three-comedian show, entry into door prizes, a 50/50 and silent auction.
Tickets must be purchased in advance and can be done so online or through the mail to WAG, Attn: Comedy Club, P.O. Box 222, Wyandotte, MI 48192. Please email with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE: The date has since changed since the show was first announced last month. The venue had a conflict of interest and were unable to honor the original date of April 9.
READ ALL ABOUT IT!
WAG is pleased to announce our partnership with Heritage Newspapers. The newspaper chain most popularly known for its Downriver thrice-weekly publication, The News-Herald, publishes nearly a dozen award-winning community newspapers. And now, WAG is able to raise a few dollars whenever someone subscribes to the paper.
WAG will earn up to $20 for every customer who purchases a 1-year subscription to their paper of choice. Please see the list of newspapers and annual subscription prices below. Each must be prepaid and can be done via check, money order or VISA/MasterCard/Discover. To participate, please email us to set up payment arrangements. And, remember, a one-year subscription is far cheaper than buying it from a box or a store. So, if you enjoy the paper, now's a great time to save some monyey, while also helping homeless animals.

SPONSOR AN ANIMAL
Need a last-minute gift idea? Have someone who is impossible to buy for or already has all the latest gadgets imaginable? We have a solution for you!
Any animal up for adoption is available for a sponsorship. Your one-time or monthly donation will go toward feeding and providing veterinary care for the animal until he or she finds a permanent home. For a donation of $20 or more, WAG will send you (or a gift recipient of your choice) a photo of the animal you are sponsoring as well as an update when he or she is adopted. This way, you can see how your donation was directly used to aid a homeless animal in need.
